A 29 year old women recently welcomed three healthy babies into the world at Mediclinic Al Noor Hospital after struggling with conception following her first caesarean section delivery in 2016.

Her thorough medical investigations revealed the root cause of the problem being abnormalities in both the thyroid and pituitary glands, which required a specific hormonal treatment, followed by ovulation induction therapy.

Dr. Nidal Al Attia, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Mediclinic Al Noor Hospital, said: “The accurate diagnosis of similar medical conditions followed by the right treatment regimen, can save the patient a lot of time and hassle to achieve their family goals.”

Dr. Al Attia added: “With close monitoring and the right treatment plan to normalise her condition, the patient successfully conceived and became pregnant with triplets.”

Pregnancies with multiple babies are considered high-risk and require close follow-up and monitoring to avoid premature births. In this particular case, the patient presented with preterm labour 26 weeks into her pregnancy and was safely transferred by ambulance to a government hospital at which her condition was successfully stabilised.

With appropriate counselling, rest and certain medications, the pregnancy was extended by five more weeks. At week 31, the patient presented at Mediclinic Al Noor Hospital with severe pain and tenderness at the location of the C-section scar which mandated an emergency surgery by Dr. Nidal Al Attia to prevent the scar from rupturing, which can result in very serious complications.

“The cesarean section went well and two healthy baby boys and a baby girl were born weighing 1.870 kg, 1.900 kg and 1.550 kg.” Dr. Al Attia added: “Our goal was to safely extend the delivery for as long as possible whilst keeping the safety aspect of both the mother and her babies our first priority.”
