For those who are looking at their phone network’s name right now

And noticed that there has been a change, then don’t be alarmed.

As the UAE enters the New Year, it is also gearing for highly anticipated events – from concerts, athletic events, competitions and more.

2019 is starting off on a good note with the AFC Asian Cup being the first nation-wide event to take place in the UAE.

Several residents, however, woke up to their phone network’s abrupt change on Saturday.

Etisalat, one of the UAE’s leading phone networks, made an official comment on their Twitter account as a tribute to the start of the AFC Asian Cup in the UAE.

It is not unusual for phone network names to change in dedication to special events in the UAE and this is the first change of 2019.

The AFC Asian Cup 2019 started on January 5 at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi and will commence taking place in various stadiums around the UAE.

The UAE is hosting this year’s 17th edition of the AFC Asian Cup and promises to bring an unforgettable experience for football lovers in the country.

Thousands of fans and spectators of this popular sport are expected to watch the AFC Asian Cup in the stadium and millions of viewers to tune in from around the world.

What is the AFC Asian Cup?

Running its 17th edition in 2019, the AFC Asian Cup is a 51 match football tournament that hosts the world's best football leagues.

With the theme of “Bringing Asia Together,” the football cup promised to also host three of the nation’s most popular singing talents in the cup’s ongoing celebrations, including:

  • Hussain Al Jassmi
  • Eida Al Menhali
  • Balqees Ahmed Fathi

The tournament had commenced on January 5 with the UAE playing against Bahrain in a nail-biting match that saw a 1-1 final score in Abu Dhabi.

And on January 6, football fans will see Jordan take on Australia in Al Ain.

Remaining schedule for the AFC Asian Cup

Round 16, the quarterfinals, semi-finals and the finals are TBD.
