I see this forum is not as busy as the Qatar one but hopefully someone is reading it!
Despite having only moved to Doha a couple of months ago, there is a strong possibility that we may move again to Bahrain in the next few months as my husband has a fairly long term commitment to a client in Khobar which keeps him there most of the week.
We don't want to live in Saudi so we are coming to explore Bahrain this weekend. Any advice on good areas to live would be very welcome. We very much like the look of Amwaj but is it too far to commute to Khobar from there? We are late 40s with children at university in the UK so no need to factor schools into the equation.
Is the political situation calming down a bit now and if not, is it something that should put us off totally?
Any other advice gratefully received! Thanks.

Moved from Bahrain after 3 years to dubai. We first lived South Manama in a lovely apartment close to Brit club as family stated to grow we moved over to Saar area well top end of budaiya highway. Close to schools shops and dilmun club and rugby club. Once your a member of either you just pay 1bd to enter hatch club Brit club or dilmun club. The compound we lived on has some available 3 bedroom villa 1level lovely porch area swimming pool and tennis court security 600bd. I have contact for a agent if you need one. :-) as far as troubles differences they still go on and you do tend to avoid the areas most known for it. I agree with Alaingirl, I have lived in a few places in the ME but Bahrain is my favourite. And the Brit Club was my second home :-) we had a great time there and have not found the same in other places, especially Qatar, I prefer Saudi to Doha funnily enough. I would go back to Bahrain any day, even with the troubles.

One thing if I may say - I far prefer Bahrain over Dubai anytime. More of a close knit community and more things to do (strangely said but had wonderful friends in Bahrain and not one here). The Brit Club is absolutely fantastic (near Juffair) - more than any club that I only know of in Dubai. St Chris sucks as told my eldest daughter "you failed the entrance exam wonderfully" however, Amwaj is great and so is Central Bahrain (off King Faisal). I lived there for 6 years and it is only when DH moved to here, I realised that grass is not greener on the other side. When DH moved to Dubai, I rented an apartment in the Lulu Towers but then the Pearl Roundabout Riots started and I fled (did not even given notice on my job).... Oh, and the driving is so much better in Bahrain - I gave up when arrived here.. <em>edited by Alaingirl on 14/10/2013</em>

There is the Dilmun Club in Saar (straight off the Janabiya highway), The Ritz (in Seef Area) or the Sofitel (Zallaq - bit of a drive but lovely beach). Satellite can be hooked up in a day and Internet usually takes 3 working days. You'll be fine honesty :) I've been here 12 years so it can't all be bad!

Thanks brissy mum. I thought that was the case. We were there this weekend and I really liked the feel of the place, not as glam as Qatar but more interesting I think. Found a lovely villa on a small compound in Janabiyah - next to Saudi Ambassador's residence so probably pretty well-guarded! Are things like satellite tv and internet easy enough to arrange? All utilities apart from those are included in the house rent so won't have to worry about those but don't want to be without the internet for long! What clubs would you recommend joining for people our age with no kids at home? Thanks

Unfortunately we all seem to get a little blase about things now.. you just learn what areas to avoid (they are mostly in the same areas over & over again (ie - Saar but only in certain areas of Saar)) and much sure that you get updates as to what areas to avoid. Hopefully things after the F1 next weekend hopefully things will die back down again. The area I live I never see anything but I live out in Riffa so that's not unusual.. It's not that bad though, if it was there wouldn't still be so many expats living here.. don't be scared :)

Amwaj is great for lifestyle choice but as your husband will be commuting to KSA it is quite a distance. Personally for me I would think it would be better to look at the Janabiya, Jasra, Saar areas (in saying Saar though - not near the village closer to the highway to avoid 'events'. There are some lovely compounds out there that are quite self contained and the highway makes it easy to get anywhere. **Make sure that you hubby gets the VIP pass for the causeway negotiated in his contract as this will cut down his commute time a lot **
