I read in the Marhaba Guide once, that swimwear and Bikinis are acceptable only on Beaches and Pools.. and then it states that you should dress modestly anywhere else! so law doesn't mind... as long as you don't mind the staring! which is really annoying!

OK so we just got home and wanted to give my full report. We were there from about 11-4 so I was a bit worried it would be too busy at that time, especially since I had the dog. It was definitely busier today but not too crowded at all. We went far away from anyone and used 2 suv's to make a "wall". Today we had "our men" with us. Honestly I felt better today with more people there than during the week and it was empty. When it was empty and someone get's "too close" it's creepy. Here is what I did today and I think this is what I will continue to do...I wore a tankini and I wore a "wrap" around my bottom half. If I got up to move around I just used the wrap the best I could to cover myself. If I sat down I moved it around to get sun. After awhile, I had to put a long sleeve shirt on anyway just to block the sun. The later it got it seemed the more women I noticed in abaya's so I was conscious of that and I did not want to offend anyone and tried to stay covered. I have been told that basically, if someone makes a complaint, you run the risk of police being called, etc. so I will stick with my swim suit wraps :) Not like I'm fit enough to be prancing around in a bikini anyway!!! ;)

I don't think Qatar law specificially addresses what women can and cannot wear in public. However, they can charge you with indecency should someone complain. And people do complain. Personally, I only know of one instance - the police were not involved, but the offended person (a national) spat on the offendee - wearing shorts out jogging. The police don't go looking for you but don't tick anyone off. It's always better to err on the side of caution. Having your husband with you not only prevents the pervs from getting too close but it gives you an "advocate" who is "responsible" for you should something arise. Confrontation should be avoided at all costs if a complaint is made, just cover up.

I went to Al Wakra Beach yesterday and wore a 2 piece, mind you I don't prance around and flaunt myself...I usually use my vehicle as a shield to block myself the "traffic" and I also only go with my husband. To be honest it's taken me awhile to get comfortable in a bathing suit there, there's been times where I'm 15 feet away from a veiled woman and wouldn't dare strip down to my bathing suit in front of her. But I have seen women in bathing suits numerous times and have never heard of any issues arising.

Is it perhaps better saved for a weekday? Today, there were two white buses with workers on Al Wakra beach, which probably wouldn't happen on any other day. But they didn't bother anybody (parked most right side, and mainly stayed ther). I'm sure a weekday would be less busy ther.

I just came from Al Wakra (it's Friday, I was ther from 10.30 to 12). Tried to be in my bikini for a while (just to get some sun on my belly! :) ) Well, I have to admit I have never done this before, this was the first time I "stripped"... I've always been "decent" on public beaches and didn't know what to expect. Was together with DH & DS. The "traffic" on the beach (if you know what I mean) was not too bad. But after a while I started to feel uncomfortable with an arab guy, who just sat ther in his SUV 20 meters from us and kept staring at me. Had to put on my dress again, and after a short while he left. No worries, if you're comfortable with staring -- just do what feels good (unless police stops you for showing too much skin :) ) edited by K3 on 11/03/2011

Don't do it unless you have your husband with you. He can then handle the trolls and the police. However, also wear a conservative 1 piece. I have seen women in 2 pc suits but the "traffic" by arab men in large SUVs as well as local laborers on foot who go to the beach on weekends can get to be quite heavy.

ccdoha, below is an excerpt from the US Embassy's Warden's message 9 July 2009, if it is of any help: "Western bathing attire is worn only at hotel pools and private beaches". However, I have seen ladies in groups (men and women) on week-ends wearing swimsuits, bikinis, at beaches out of town, e.g. Fuwairit. I think it is a personal choice as to whether you want to do it or not but in case of any problem, I think you will be seen as being in the wrong for not having respected the religious and cultural beliefs and putting yourself at risk. Whatever you choose to do, please keep yourself safe :):)

Well I think Friday will always be the worst day given all the single lads aren't having to work. Perhaps cover up today and see what it's like...?

I am going to try there for tomorrow for the first time and I certainly plan on wearing a swimsuit, it's 30 degrees this weekend! Of course I'll have sarong and tank on hand if I don't feel comfortable. I think it's up to the individual, do you [b'>feel [/b'>comfortable wearing your swimmers there?
