Cockroaches? Murders? Is it REALLY that bad?

Hi girls/ladies
We have a few days to decide whether we are going to move to Doha and sign a contract. We will be working at the English Modern School. Off course I am doing my research but hitting a decision making wall, and it is definitely leaning towards NO. Are there any teachers of the EMS out there that we could have a chat with ( off record ) we want to know about the recent murder at the housing apartment and the safety there. Also we do not find out much about the school on line so want to know more before we commit.

Next to that I have a cockroach fobia and even thought I have lived in Asia for 6 years and have travelled quite a bit, the stories I read on the forums about Qatar are horrendous! ( I am used to some occasionally in our house flying in from outside as an accident) Is it REALLY that bad? I don't think I can live with roaches crawling out of the toilet bowl ( or I would not want to)
We will get housing supplied by the school but don't have my hopes up on that one ( especially after reading some of the teacherwifes stories here on line) we will not be payed an enormous amount of money so will have to live "frugal" if we want to save some.
Is it possible to arrive with 2 people and a dog and stay in a cockroach free hotel / furnished apartment until we find something CLEAN? Or do they simply not exist ?
I think the having to live with a lot of cockroaches and having no control over them ( like keeping my house clean, foodfree) is my biggest NO! We are depressed as we were getting REALLY excited by living in that bizarre and exhilarating place and now we might decline the contract. We are rather adventurous but just have a cleanliness issue ( especially around my own bedroom and bathroom)
Please please any one who can put things in perspective or just give us the honest truth would be really really appreciated.
We might be teaching your children so we want to be happy off course ;-)
Thank you very much.

My children currently attend EMS in Al Wakra. The student population is 95% Arabic (mostly locals) , the teachers that i have to interact with are nice and 90% westerners (my saving grace) and the facilities are small but nice. The school doesn't have the best communication system with parents but it is bearable not that it will affect you since you would be staff. I live in Doha at DH company accomodation which is a hotel (so can't give any insight into housing market) and they have handled the spraying of our apartment and all maintenance required. For the 6 months that i have been here i have not seen any cockroaches (knock on wood) or bugs or creepy crawlies lol.

Oh, didn't realise you would be in Al Wakra - that won't be a problem for you then!

Thanks English Lady for the input. I do realize it is going to be different than it is here ( he is free to go wherever he wants, big garden jungle outside , lots of streetdogs to play with ) it is going to be an adjustment to us too , and I am sure I will curse at times BUT he is family and belongs with us so is coming and we all will have to adjust. I am sort of hoping that in Al Wakra there might me more opportunity for us to walk him than in Doha self. But I might be mistaken. Also I am worried about all the poisening going on. :-) We are thinking of getting him a girlfriend at the local dog rescue center so he is not alone. Thank you for your thinking along with all our decision making. :-)

PS DebK Can I ask you where you live? ( I guess I want to live there too) The compound in which I am living in entirely consists of employees of CNA-Q. So it's not necessarily low rent, but it also isn't a high rent type of facility. As it is all provided for us I honestly have no idea what the rent would be. :) ~ Deb

As the others have said, don't worry about the cockroaches, I've hardly ever seen any. But I wanted to share my experience of living in Doha with a dog - I don't know if your dog requires much exercise, but it's not that easy to take dogs out for walks, they are not allowed in public parks, so generally if you want to let your dog have a run off the lead it will involve a 30 min plus drive each way to the beach. I have sometimes found this quite hard with working full time and it might be something else for you to consider.

I can't help much about the school, but as for apartment living, I live in a 2 bedroom in al saad and have not seen one cockroach ( I have only been here for about a month though) we did have a very minor problem with ants though, and the fact that I have small children who like to snack a lot while watching Barney didnt help lol, but it was nothing that couldn't be taken care of with Pif Paf bug spray. As for rent we are paying QR 5,500. I have seen online places advertised for 4000, but I'm not sure what the conditions are.

Thank you all for your input. @RachelA I have to clarify that we are offered school housing at their teachers accomodation but because we do have a dog we would like to look into a "house" so not to hinder other people. They have agreed on the possibility of finding a home for us. You are right we do have to clarify what we will receive or how they would see that set up actually. They are very flexible and open in the comunication and putting no pressure on us deciding...just feel that it is not fair on them to drag this out to much. Good other points there about temperary accomodation and especially the one about the healthinsurance. THANKS! I would have taken hat one for granteed as that is what we have now. I am coming with a friend - female- and we will be sharing the house. We will both be working at the school and both entitled to flights anually. I will get clarified if we also get a flight out at beginning and end of contract as I guess that is slightly different. The package isnt fantastic but if I was into teaching for the money I would have given up long ago ;-). It seems like a nice school where there is a lot to learn and grow and it has ( as it seems ) fantastic resources. And I really liked the people I interviewed with.

As far as I know, EMS has mostly Asian subcontinent expat children and possibly a number of local (Qatari) students. I've also lived in the ME for ove 8 years & have only ever seen half a dozen cockroaches. I also can't bear the things, and if they were an issue here, I would have shipped out long ago. The chemical spraying outside of the villa is definitely advised though. I can't say what an apartment might be like for cockroaches as I've never lived in one. You would be able to get a small 3 bed villa for possibly around QR13 000 per month plus utilities (ballpark figure of QR800/mnth for utilities for 2 people). You have a few days to sign a contract and yet you don't know what kind of housing allowance you will be getting? Not okay!! You need to know this before you agree to anything. Many schools have accommodations that they rent and give to their teachers. Assuming you are a teaching couple, you want to review BOTH contracts to make sure that you are both entitled to the allowance or that they are giving you accommodation for a couple. BTW I've lived here for almost 8 years, in both lower and higher rent places, both apartments and villas, and I have not had any problem with cockroaches. Regular bug control, at least outside, helps a lot. A few other key points to look for in the contract: If you are getting housing allowance instead of actual housing, will they put you in temporary accommodation for a reasonable period until you are able to sort yourselves? Are you getting international medical insurance? If you are only getting local (which I've heard some schools do) what will you do when you are traveling outside Qatar? You say "we" -- I've assumed in my points above that you are a married couple. If not, this all falls through as it is illegal for non-married mix-s3x couples to live together here. Hope this helps... Are you EACH entitled to 1 round-trip ticket home annually, as well as your initial flight in and your final flight out? edited by RachelA on 10/01/2013

Thanks DebK I know! that is exactly what we are trying to balance out. Bad things happen everywhere. So we have to keep things in perspective. But sometimes that is hard if you are not there and " feel" the vibe yourself. About the roaches I am very very happy to hear. Without having to tell me what you pay for rent, is that roach free living a possibility for people on a low rent? We will be getting some of the rent payed but I have no idea how much yet and what we would be able to afford. It all seems sooooo expensive ( at the moment we pay the equivalent of 2.500 QaR!!! For a 3 bedroom house in the jungle) But we are ready for a new adventure and opera, ballet, desert and movies sound soooo exciting! .

I know nothing about EMS ... but here is something to keep in mind: Bad things happen in all areas of the world and the recent situation with the teacher being murdered is tragic, but not the norm. Sometimes people become too complacent and fail to take the safety precautions they would normally adhere to even in North America. As for cockroaches -- We moved here 3 1/2 years ago and I have only ever seen one cockroach inside my accomodation. Our facility takes care of having things sprayed once a month. We don't allow them to spray inside, but do have them spray outside our villa. Even if your facility does not take care of spraying for you it would be easy enough for you to contact a service to come do that. Or there are sprays you can buy to take care of it yourself. Good luck with your decision! ~ Deb
