Hello ladies,

My son has been offered a place in SEK, any reviews and insight for this school would be really helpful.

Many thanks in advance

Are school fees not on the website? I'd check the grades against ages as what they call grade 8 is different to UK grade 8. It's 42k for pre-school 4 and then goes up from there. It's one of the more expensive schools in Doha

Eleanor it's better to call more than once on the same day I'll try to call as many times as I can, but I have to work too......looking for a school place in Doha has required a lot of energies, time and money, and it has been a frustrating experience. I would have preferred to concentrate these energies and time to my job or to my daughter or to myself or my friends, instead of doing 9 applications more complicated than if I had applied to Harvard or to the NASA, and then emails, phone calls, etc :-) there should be e better system....like, for instance, unifying the admission forms and the assessment procedures....

Hi, I have received a mail from DBS for an assesment for my son, they are opening a new branch in Alwakrah. Just incase u wanna apply Thank you very much, but as far as I understand, Al Wakrah is another town south from Doha, quite far from where we would live and work, because we would be in Education City, north-west od Doha, and live in a compound of Qatar Foundation near Sherborne School (which is full and which will never admit our daughter, not being her English mother tongue - we know it. there in also another school in Al Wakrah, GEM school, which I think it is good, but, as I said, too far :-(

There are loads of Qatari kids who speak fluent English. Just in general they are already in one of the international schools and therefore not likely to shift at the higher grades. Loads of Qatari kids who speak good English coming into school as well (because of English nursery). I thought it was 10% Qatari they had to take but I might be wrong - not an issue in my son's class because the vast majority of the class are ESL anyway (in fact I can only think of 4 who aren't including him). Apparently everyone who applied for pre-k3 who didn't get a place went on the waiting list. From what I saw roughly 2/3 of places went to siblings (assuming they aren't opening another class which I don't think they are).

I tried to call SEK but with no result, they don't answer the phone. Maybe they are too busy. May I ask you which are the new two schools which are going to open in West Bay? thank you very much. Eleonor Any way with 2 new schools opening near by in September West Bay will be well served by schools.

I wish all the best to SEK school, it is warm and friendly for kids. I don't know if they learn much in the upper grades but the preschool is nice. It looks more empty than full this year but I am sure that it will grow progressively. Any way with 2 new schools opening near by in September West Bay will be well served by schools.

marykar - sorry but I think your information is out of date. My child went through the pre-k 3 assessment this year as did many others I know. My child is the only one I know who got a place - like all schools they are massively oversubscribed and the majority of places went to siblings. They certainly don't need the students more than the students need them. In later years they may still have space but not in early years. Last year was completely different because they needed fluent-English speaking students (although they were still full in early years at the start of term). For background, my son's class is roughly 40% Qatari, 40% Spanish-speaking and 20% other. That looks pretty representative of the rest of the school from what I can see (although the older years may be less Qatari because of the need for good English).

Just want to add that last year my daughter didn't do well at all at the assessment :) they spent one hour with her before to get a single word :) but they took her :) I think it is a kind of procedure to respect, kind of face control. They need students more than students need them as they are a new school and not known in Doha. More over, at least 2 new schools will open just next street in September, so the concurrence is high in the area :)

My daughter is at preschool 3 at SEK and we love it. It is a new school, they put an effort to get the reputation. We have a native English speaking teacher and a spanish assistant. The kids are mainly Europeans. The school stuff is friendly and helpful. The number of classes will increase year after year, so I think it wouldn't be difficult to get a place at this school. Just make sure that your kid is fluent in English AND make sure that you really want IB curriculum because in early years it is fine enough, amusing, but at the last stages the child would need more serious school if he or she pretend to enter some serious high school. call the head teacher directly, her name is Vivian, she is very helpful, but don't waste your time on communication with the secretary :)

The admissions departments at all schools in Doha can be difficult at times (to put it mildly). I'd recommend calling them. Thank you to you all - I'll try to call them, as soon as I find the energy to do it. This morning I am pretty discouraged and I am thinking of giving it up and remain in Italy, as we are finding obstacles after obstacles in this moving project.... :-(

@E: My son will be going to grade 2, also my accept was surprisingly sitting in the junk mail where as the other communication from them was not also only I received the accept mail and not my husband. May be you should call, we had a very pleasant experience with the admissions dept. uote=Eleonor'>dear Lalala and purpleviolet, may I ask you in which grade will be your children next year at SEK? I am asking because we applied too, we did the assessment (Flying to Barcelona for the assesment from Italy!!), but we have been told that our daughter is in waiting list. We asked to have the results of the school assessment and to know what is the position in waiting list, but we never had the reply, and I did not like this behaviour at all!! I think that, after having paid for the assessment, the least we deserve is a feedback. thank you!!!! Eleonor My son goes there and my daughter will go next year. Very happy with the school (only school my daughter applied to). Do you have any specific questions?

Not sure that's at all relevant to your child's admission though - my son applied last year and my daughter has sibling-preference.
