Hi All,
Contemplating a sudden move to AD this summer. What is the lifestyle like for teenagers? I have a 14 year old son (2 younger ones as well) but was wondering if there are communities where kids play in the streets with parks and go to each other homes etc? We currently live in the US but he doesn't have that here and tends to spend weekends playing on the computer (other than soccer). Otherwise we have to arrange to have friends dropped over! Just wondering what they get up to on weekends. The school we're considering is GEMS American Academy.
Any information appreciated :)

Looks like spaces are available at GEMS though they are awaiting word as to whether or not they have qualified to offer the IB Diploma. The other one that I'm interested in, American Community School, looks like I may be able to apply for 9th grade but probably not for my younger ones. any thoughts on the reputation of ACS? And if we were able to get into ACS by some miracle, what are the best compounds for kids that I should look into. again 4+ bedrooms, some yard, possibly a pool. Thanks! edited by Islandgirl1973 on 14/05/2014 acs is a good school, a non profit sch. its the second oldest after bsak here. compounds near acs, khaydia village, mushrif village, karama compound, mushrif gardens loads if your budget will reach.

Thank you so much! Haven't heard details of package (budget etc) so will be back here for more advice once I get those. In general is housing market okay with regard to supply? I'm in a housing market that is crazy at the moment and it took us 6 months to find somewhere...don't want to go through that again! its very different here to the us, and the rents are going thru the roof! school places are like gold dust... but this has happened many times before

No spaces yet. Submitted online enquiry. Looks like there may be spaces for 2 older boys (4th and 9th grades). Wait listed for Kindergarten but he's easier...if I can get him into a school for one year and hope that a space opens up for 1st grade then I'll be happy. Are there big compounds close to GEMS with larger homes (4+ bedrooms) and pools? Do these compounds have outdoor space? Gardens etc? Would be nice to find a place with lots of kids who ride bikes etc. in the cooler months. raha gardens is the best one there... kca has compounds but may be like 10 houses or smaller. some with pools most without. it depends on your budget.
