Did anyone mention Pauls in Landmark? They have a nice selection in the mornings, but it goes quickly!

Another place that sells bakemart (and usually has rye bread)-- is in Centrepoint. There is a small bakemart convenience store near the Food Court.

The new large grocery shop on Haloul, Food World, I think, sells BakeMart bread. They don't have the selection of Megamart, but they have some of them. I don't think they have the nicer crustier loaves like the ryes and the whole grains, but I do get the nice wheat bread for toast and sandwiches. I have started doing most of my shopping there. Lovely store and the staff is great. Fruit and Veg is pretty nice, too. LOADS AND LOADS better than C4 (though that isn't very hard)! Lots of British stuff apparently. care

I buy bread at MegaMart (Bakemart) - they do a gorgeous seeded brown loaf called Norlander, also light and dark rye bread as well as a large selection of other fresh baked breads. Helps that I live next door mind - convenient to pop in on an almost daily basis!!

PS and I agree the Spinneys here is nothing like Spinneys in Dubai, only thing in common is the name, unfortunately. I have been here a year and still long for the Spinneys in Jumeirah 3.

The closest you will get to German style bread in Doha is Megamart...

So, I just googled it and got a few pictures. lol, sorry...I honestly just had no idea what it was, but its similar to a baguette it looks like. (or at least some of the pics looked like that). We actually have bought bread like that here, we get it at a little corner store down from where we live in the Villagio area and I believe its made fresh every morning. Just read that he is looking for German bread...not sure if they sell that there though. edited by nole on 10/04/2011

when I say "crust" i mean a crust that is somewhat crispy....crusty outside, soft inside. Which European (continental) bread often is.

out of curiousity...what is "European" style bread? I am only used to either white/wheat bread with the crust on..never even knew they sold it without! haha. And we get our bread either at lulu's or C4, but we like the milk bread actually..never even tried it until we came here and its pretty tasty! Although, as GinaM said..it is a little sweeter than what we are used to.

Bread wise- european style, I vote for PQ (pain quotidien Villaggio) and Paul. Carreffour has also some fresh baked sliced white bread no milk based. New item.. available 3 days a week. Plus the pave bread...also white, quite soft though.

Lulu Gharaffa has the best bakery/bread selection I think. Either imported Kingsmill (pretty expensive but worth it cause it lasts heaps longer) or the stuff that they bake is pretty good as well. Also Pauls (cafe) at Landmark and Villagio sell some great loaves of bread really cheap. Their Ancien and 5 seed loaves are both beautiful. Family Food sell Vogels which is nice. ETA The white bread at Carrefour is milk bread - it lasts longer than the other ones that they sell (most are sliced too thinly so go stale within a day) but it is quite a sweet bread - not to my taste. edited by GinaM on 10/04/2011

May I ask where to get good bread in Doha? Husband is solo there at the moment and is already complaining he cannot find a place that sells proper bread (European style)! Are you talking about bread that has a crust? If so, there are IMHO 2 options, Spinney's at the Mall, they have packed sliced bread that is somewhat similar to European bread. Or Carrefour, they also have sliced bread with a crust, but only white. They also have a half way decent baguette.

There is a Spinneys, but don't even bother - it's absolutely nothing like the Dubai ones, don't even know why they had the cheek to call it Spinneys here...lol! I can also recommend Lulu opposite Landmark, there's a good selection of British & American foodstuff. I only ever shop there now, even if it is slightly more expensive than C4, at least you can get most of what's on your shopping list there without having to schlep all over town.

They don't sell pork. Main difference to Dubai I'd say.

Yes, and from what I understand, the Spinney's here is not up to the same standard you are used to in Dubai. I've never properly shopped at a Spinney's in Dubai, but I was quite disappointed with the Doha Spinney's. Too expensive, not a great selection. Lulu's by Landmark is quite good for imported brands.

No, I didn't move from Dubai to Doha ;). Yes, Spinneys are here and intend to open a few more branches in the coming years. Dean & DeLuca are also here - silly prices all round, of course!:\:
