Just arrived, will be working at a school in Al Khor. My birthday is coming up and I understand I can't get into most bars without my passport. The school will be keeping my passport for about a month. I am not too fussed about bars, but I'd like to get out and do something nice on my birthday. I am totally unfamiliar with Doha. Can anyone provide me with a list of nice restaurant/bars that I could get into for my birthday without my passport?

Thanks!

We haven't been asked for ID at the Jazz Bar at The Orxy. We've had tapas first at the tapas restaurant and then gone to the jazz bar after. Good tapas and a good night all round.

Essentially, anyplace that is officially classified as a bar requires a passport or Qatari ID in order to enter. Sometimes the criteria seems pretty random. As lulubaker said, the Belgian Cafe (in the Intercon) is considered a restaurant so no ID required. Champions (in the Courtyard) is a bar (even though they have a pretty full food menu) so no getting in without ID. One suggestion might be to do a Friday brunch as your bday celebration. All of the big hotels do them, and most are lovely. The Marriott is a personal favorite, as is the Ritz. You pay a set price (set lower if you're having food and soft drinks only, and more if you want wine/beer/bubbly included). Time Out Doha did a nice review of all brunches last winter -- worth a google. Welcome to Qatar. And happy birthday in advance!

Sorry you're leaving! Have you seen a lot of changes in 7 years? Were you with a school? Thanks so much for the tips on places to go for my b-day! Appreciate it!

Hi Rumers! Most 'nightclub' type bars require passports or ID, however, here is a list of some that do not. I'm sure there are others, but I've been to these ones and you don't need to show ID. The Kempinski has a lovely bar that has happy hour from 5-7 (two for one) and it's a great place to start off your evening. The Maison du Caviar in the W also has a happy hour on Wednesday from 7-9, so you can wander over there afterwards. The Belgian Cafe in the Intercon is a lively bar, again no ID required. Most restaurants that serve alcohol don't need ID, so if you want to go for a nice meal somewhere, that won't be a problem. Trader Vic's at the new Hilton is really lovely, and does great cocktails, so might be worth checking out. Enjoy Qatar - it's a good place to be. I'm leaving TODAY after 7 years here, sad to go.
