Please any helpful tips when looking for work in Abu Dhabi would be gratefully appreciated. I'm coming from the UK, how long can I stay without work? Thanks all

If you renew your visa by crossing the border in Oman it only costs dh 50 and takes about 4 hours total, driving from AD.

Benny10, you're right, you can come on a 30 day visa/no work, which can be renewed either at immigration, or a drive across the Oman border every 30 days. I think BB is just trying to give you a heads up as 'struggling' here is not the same as struggling in the UK. Struggling here means no health insurance (not NHS equivalent), no welfare etc. Jobs are there but it's your cv besides another's who has local experience/husband or fathers sponsorship/will work for less (as they don't pay rent as DH or daddy do)/ speaks multiple languages. In these tough economic times I'd rather someone tell me what it's actually like on the ground than go from hyped media. Also, AD government employees who currently live in Dubai must mve to AD so many wives will be handing out their cvs in AD from here on so you'll want to make your cv really stand out. Look at Charterhouse, they have a few AD posts. also you havent even mentioned what type of work that it is you are looking for? local experience counts for a lot, as working here is very different to the rest of the world. also being on a local contract costs the company less, ie no relocation, no flights, no benefits sometimes. your company provides you with health insurance, in ad they have to provide for family up to 3 children, in dxb just the worker...... the cost of just going to a doctor here be like 100 pounds thats just to see them, let alone the price of anything else. rent here is so much more than the uk. rental income in uk 500 pounds a month rental income here can be like 25,000 a year!

@busybee I have just been checking and I don't actually need a visa as a 'British Citizen' and as far as I can see I can stay for 30 days and possibly extend to 90 days and I don't have to be sponsored, perhaps someone who actually knows for sure can clarify this. Its difficult everywhere. it costs as a uk citizen to keep renewing...... yes you can keep doing the visa run, but its expensive to live whilst doing that. you do not need to be sponsored as a tourist, but have you the money to live here whilst looking for a job, its expensive.... once you have a job then you can change from tourist to working visa etc. in order to renew your visa after 30 days you have to pay 600dhs to be done at immigration that can be done only 1 time, then you have to do a visa run and drive across the border to oman...... and actually i know for sure and can clarify this......!

AUH is not the best place to be looking for a job. The market is completely saturated, government contracts have all but dried up, the cost of living is expensive and yes, you can stay in Abu Dhabi as a tourist for 30 days but you certainly cannot work unless you are sponsored Good luck Thank you derien, everywhere is struggling these days and I realise I will need to get sponsored if I found work to obtain a work permit. :-)

you cannot stay without a visa, you cannot work on a tourist visa, you have to be sponsored. abu dhabi is very expensive. sometimes its easier to find work when you are actually here, but auh is suffering just as much as the row and its been difficult for people here too.
