My husband is considering taking a job in Abu Dhabi (we are currently residing in the UK) and we are trying to weigh up if it will be a good move for us. The lifestyle appeals, even though the thought of packing up our life here seems very daunting! I am having trouble working out a potential budget. Could anyone give me a rough idea of monthly outgoings, excluding rent and schooling i.e. electricity, phone line, internet, local rates, TV license, food etc? We are a four person family with a 5 year old and almost 3 year old and looking at (although not decided on) living in Khalifa City. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I can't comment on utility bills as our rent and those are covered by our company but for the rest here is a rough idea (2 adults with a baby on the way): Food/Groceries: 2000-3000 p/m (that can depend where you shop and we choose to shop a lot at places like Waitrose and Spinneys for meat, fruit and veggies as they are better quality but more expensive, but for the basics and every day things we go to Lulus and Carrefour) Internet/home phone line (Etisalat Elife & Sports package ): 450 p/m Mobile Phone: anywhere up to 300dhs per month for data packages and maybe max 100 per month on calls/texts Petrol: 500 p/m per car (that's for a 4X4 and a sports car) VPN: 40 p/m (this means we can watch UK TV online and get Netflix etc. Entertainment: 2000 (this is the max for us really but we don't eat out that much these days and I am not a big drinker, alcohol can really add up on restaurant bills here) Sponsoring a maid costs us about 2000 p/m, and we have a gardener who maintains our gardens (trees and grass etc) 300 p/m. Hope that helps.

Monthly expenses seem to very hugely on the forum. But, for my family - 4 (3 adults and 1 DD 9 yrs) + maid in a villa: Electricity etc: 1,000 Food, cleaning products etc: 4,000 Internet: 479 Fuel per car: 400-500 TV package: I am unsure as we have special card from India but packages vary in price from Etisalat and usually include phone line! Internet and TV together. Perhaps someone else can help with that. I think our expenses are quite low compared with others. We don't eat out often, don't go to big hotels etc and don't belong to beach or health clubs etc. Every family is different. But, perhaps this can give you a rough idea, however.
