I personally prefer living in the tower. If you are looking for a perfect place to live in Abu Dhabi, I think Reem Island is good. ;)

Hi Jannsie, thanks so much for responding! And for all the information. We have been talking to some schools but spots are very reduced. Would you mind sharing the name of the american school? My email is [email protected]. I have a million questions but it seems that we have to focus all our energy on school searching! :) Thanks again!

HI! Sorry to respond so late, the expat email went to my junk so I didn't see your post! We have been here now for 9 months and have learned a lot!! When you come, the first thing you'll learn is that everything is done at a different pace than in Canada, patience is key. Reach out and ask for help from all people you meet, as most of us are expats and are happy to help out! Facebook is huge here with several groups to, sign into....ex: AbuDhabi Q & A has loads of stuff! Overall, I'm enjoy the experience, even with the transition! Our kids are really enjoying an American school. They love it and are finding it really easy to make friends, which was a huge relief, and the school itself offers them everything they want. If your still looking for a school get your applications in ASAP, they all seem to fill up fast and your kids will need to do pre-testing to see where they are at. You will need a transcript from the kids current school for their grades. (we did for high school at least) I'm not to knowledgable on the British schools. You can easily switch schools down the road if your not happy wherever you end up as there aren't any districts/boundaries. Housing is pretty straight forward, but yes, living close to school and work, just makes life easier as traffic can be a headache at rush hour. If you have an agent looking for your home, know that they can try and deal on the price, as theres lots available and they have come down since we got here. Our agent didn't even try and also told us we couldn't get a place by the water. (Insert eye roll....ugh!) We live in Khalifa City and find it really easy to get anywhere in Abu in 15-20 min. The bigger the home, the more power your using and its not the cheap. I really enjoy it here but I do wish we got water front or had a pool of our own. We ended up with a villa style home, lots of room and very small yards. House or apartment is up to you of course.....but there are huge 2 floor apartments so you can still have lots of space. Theres probably a lot of information I could share with you.......when are you planning to move here? Shoot me your email and we can chat a bit more in depth about the details! There are certain foods that you just can't find here or they cost a small fortune so you may want to pack extra when you come. Ummm....what else can I think of.....Canadian drivers licenses make it easy to get a UAE as they are considered equal. You just need to know where to go and what to bring. We just got back into Abu and I've got a bad head cold, so I'm not on top of my game yet between that and jet lag! lol! I'll check back soon to see if you still need a hand!! Jan

Hi, We are moving over in about 3 months and I have been on line searching for places to rent. I am asking for advice on what people prefer.... apartment living in the towers, townhouse/ villas ...
hiya, will respond, in hopes someone responds to one of my posts! don't have kids, can't comment on how that might change things but i can share a few things with you for you to look at. i'm canadian, been here for 7 years, and moved a few times.. lived in both villas and apartments, in the city and away from the city. and in conclusion... 1. i woudn't choose to live in the city again. parking situation is messy, hectic, people drive more hectic, more traffic.. more old build than new build places. that being said, it might depend on where the work office is as the commute is usually he biggest factor. there are SOME newer buildings and lovely places in the city too 2. i prefer a bit outside the city. al raha beach area has a few options, the compounds of al zeina, al muneera, al bandar. and there is a LOT coming online in the next couple months to a year. rents will go down. there is a sort of inflated bubble in this area though because of consistent demand, but it's lovely. there are townhouse options, apartments, duplexes, beachside, roadside you name it. 3. i have lived in al reef, villas and apartments. it's less pricey as it's abit further. it's a nice community, kid friendly, shops, gardens, playgrounds. the villas are not the best layed out or most beautiful.. 4. you should look at dubizzle.com, select abu dhabi apartments. you can see by area the prices if you select based on rooms. all the above areas mentioned, i think are near some schools but i can't tell you exactly which ones (but you can google maps it!) you might want to look at saadiyat island, beautiful but pricey . beachy. at the other end of the city. reem island has a LOT of inventory, new buildings.. no beach. these areas are opposite ends to the first few suggested. let me know if you have specific questions!

Hi Jannsie, I was reading your posts and hoping you could help. We are also a Canadian family potentially moving to Abu Dhabi this year. My kids are a bit younger (6 and 8) and i'm wondering if you are still there and if you could provide me with some insights on your experience moving there. We have been told that the first thing to look at is schools and based on that we should look at close by housing options. Did your kids end up attending the Canadian school? I have heard good things of the British and American curriculum but dont know anyone that has attended the Canadian school. Also, are there any tips you could provide me with? anything that you think should be on the things to check before moving? Thanks so much for any advice you can give.

Hey Les27, Thank you so much for responding! I do have a number of other questions if you have time! We are actually moving from the U.S., but are Canadian, so we could attend the Canadian school. How is it going for you guys there? How soon should I be applying to schools in order to be accepted, we will get there at the beginning of August, so not sure when they do these tests either. Are they really difficult or are they just to see where the child is at in their grade level. I did look into your area for living, it sounds like a good fit for us with the amenities and sense of community! It seemed close to the airport on the map, is that ever bothersome? I saw various rentals on the water in the Al Raha Creek area for beach access and water views but its right by a busy road, whats your thoughts. My hubby is working in the Industrial area, so we have to watch for his commute time and school drives too. I saw on dubizzle that some places charge a fee to just look at a home, have you heard of this? You mentioned I could get more help on the Abu Dhabi site....I thought i was on it. LOL! Can you direct me to the better one! Sorry theres so many questions all packed into one post....this is the short version, I cut out a fair bit! And your right, we are newbies, it's crazy to try and figure this all out, I really appreciate the help! Thanks :)

Hi Mummymidwife I have not lived in Dubai although im a 1hrs drive from there so not sure about there. In Abu Dhabi there are tons of clinics and hospitals. I remember my mum being so surprised seeing so many! But im sure Dubai has more. As for schools, before it was extremely difficult to get in but due to more schools been built it is alot easier. Expats can only go to International schools (I assume these are considered private) which i think is the majority of schools here. They do have alot of British curriculum schools here, as well as American. My daughter did an interview/test for Al Yasmina school (British) and got in but my son didnt (he has some learning difficulties so i am homeschooling him). Because of location and her friends I ended up sending her to the Canadian school which she loves. School fees for Canadian, British and American schools which has mostly their native teachers teaching, range from 45000-about 80000 p/a! The newer schools are on the higher end but ill say average is 50000 (all dirhams). There are other cheaper schools but they do the Indian curriculum. Alot of expats get their kids education paid for by the company as part of their package. My husband got this as we wouldnt of been able to come here if they didnt offer it due to affordability. So depending on where you end up living, you can choose the school accordingly. If you have more questions feel free to ask or if you want to chat privately you can send me your info. All the best on your new adventure.

Hi. Sorry no one has responded yet. I find this forum for Abu Dhabi a bit quiet but the other one specifically for Abu Dhabi gets more responses. I moved to Abu Dhabi 2yrs ago and didnt get much help with where was best to stay. I too have a dog, and 2 kids, currently 13 and 17. After looking at several areas, by far Al Reef Villas was and still is my best choice. It is a massive compound divided into 4 'villages of villa" and in the centre of it is the apartments. Apartments are 1-3 bedrooms with a balcony and villas are 2-5beds with a small yard. I am living in a 5bed which comes with a pool but am moving to the 3bed apartment still within the compound. The 5bed has become too big for me to maintain and we looking as reducing costs. The draw for this place is that it has a great sense of community here and ideal for kids (and dogs). There are pools and parks and you always see kids and family outside have picnics, jogging and walking their dogs. I always got told Al Reef is far.....far from what i would ask? But realise its only far (about 30mins) from central Abu Dhabi (the city part) which we rarely go to. Weare situated a mere 10 minutes from all the tourist attractions (waterworld, Yasmall etc) and within our compound there are restaurants and takeaways. My kids school is about 15kms from us too. Other compounds like Al Raha gardens are also popular with expats. Go onto apps like dubizzle to see the villas and price ranges. If you need to be in the city, then central Abu Dhabi will need to be your choice where there are mostly apartments. Sorry for the long message. Hope it helped and feel free to ask anything. I think sometimes people forget we were all newbies at some stage.

Hi, We are moving over in about 3 months and I have been on line searching for places to rent. I am asking for advice on what people prefer.... apartment living in the towers, townhouse/ villas or compounds? Kids are 16 and 14 so we will need to be close to American based schools. As far as the hubby and I, we want to be able to make some friends in the community and get out on the weekends. So having some fun amenities or places to go important...pubs, restaurants etc! Can't wait to use the beaches!! We are bringing our dog with us so we have to have decent sized patio/deck, or just places to take her for a walk. ANY other suggestions or ideas, feel free to let me know!! :) ps... I may be posting more questions as I think of them!! lol!
