Hi all,

I wil need to do a "visa run" soon but am not sure what this entails. Has anyone here done it and where did you go?

As Beany says. I posted instructions and directions (including map link) to get there a couple of years ago: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic136977-which-border-for-visa-run.aspx Casta, we used your detailed directions for our visa run and everything went as you describe. Just a minor update: you can pay the 200 AED either in cash or by credit card. Thank you for the helpful information.

I used to go to Mezyad checkpoint (last time was about a year ago though, maybe google 'Mezyad' to get more up to date reports), which is just the other side of Al Ain. It was straightforward - you'll get an exit stamp on the UAE side and pay a small fee (35 dhs?), then we walked across to the Oman entry point...this was because we didn't have proper Omani car insurance to drive across but it's not far and we got offered lifts. On the Omani side you fill in a card, tell them it's a visa run and pay the fee which last time was 20 rials (200 dhs) by credit card. If accompanied by someone who has a residence visa, they don't need to pay or get stamped if I remember. You get an entry and exit stamp, then head back to the UAE side. First to the immigration office on the right, then through customs, then you're done. I may have forgotten a step but you will pointed in the right direction, just hold on to any paper slips given to you. Depending on how busy it is, the whole thing took around 40 mins plus the drive there and back. I think we worked out that Mezyad was the easiest one for us from AD but you could also do it during a weekend away in Fujairah (Kalba checkpoint, same procedure as above but a longer walk). Should point out that I have a UK passport so get a free visa on arrival in the UAE, might be different depending on your nationality.
