Buses With Free WiFi Launched in Abu Dhabi

More than 500 public buses in Abu Dhabi will be upgraded with 5G technology by 2020

Great news for Abu Dhabi residents who commute on the daily, buses shuttling passengers across the three most popular bus routes are now equipped with free WiFi, announced by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) at the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi (DoT).

520 buses will have onboard internet access by the end of March 2020, including main bus stations and all air-conditioned bus shelters in the city. Enabled by telecommunications provider du, bus passengers who wish to use the free WiFi must connect to Emirates Wi-Fi by du and they will receive a text message with a unique log-in code.

The move was made to enhance transport services in Abu Dhabi with modern amenities and to encourage more residents to opt for public transport.

Mohammed Hamad Al Muhairi, Executive Director of Public Transport at the ICT, said, "The signing of the contract with du to provide a free Wifi service on public buses, is part of the ongoing efforts by the ITC to improve the quality of services in this sector and to meet customers' needs in order to raise the level of satisfaction of our services. The introduction of Wifi on public transport buses will attract more people use these sophisticated services."

In an effort to reduce environmental impact and urge commuters to go for environmentally friendly transport options, Abu Dhabi also rolled out several toll gates effective October 15.
