There was a recent discussion about this on the forum. Suggest you register your tenancy agreement which provides you with protection should the matter become contentious. LL must give you one year's notice if he intends to move in.
A lot of landlords are flat-out desperate now, because they bought in the last year or so of the property bubble and so they've got insanely large mortgages that current rents don't come close to covering. I guess they reckon that if they make stupid demands, like 2 years' rent in 1 cheque or a 33% rental hike, their tenants might just be stupid enough to go along with it.
Trying not to be too p-ed off with him, maybe he has his own problems.... Could really do without moving for the 4th time since we've been here, especially with 3 kiddies, one only 6 months. Thanks choc1, hoped this was the case :)
What is it with landlords at the moment...... We have just moved into the lakes, before we secured a place we had landlords increasing what they wanted at the last moment, or deciding they wanted a 2 year lease, and 1 cheques ( for the 2 years...). Now we live here, there are quite a few empty places. 2 that we looked at are still empty ( 2 months on) and another one close by has just become available.
Yet they are making demands as if the market is booming......
According to RERA, the LL has to prove that he's going to personally live in the property - they can't use that as an excuse to turf people out anymore. Plus a 33% raise? Who is he kidding? When there's a complete oversupply, rents are still coming down.

Hi Ladies. Our lovely landlord informed us he wanted to raise the rent by 33% :o !!! When we pointed out that according to the RERA index he cannot increase our rent he decided he's moving in. I think this is a big no no BUT on our contract it says "renewal us at the landlords discretion" ... Will ring rent committee in the morning but anyone else had this? Thanks x
