I have searched the Omani threads on here, but am wondering specifically about hotels in, or v near, Muscat city centre? Know lots of people who adore the Shangri-La, but also have heard that it can be a pain getting from town to S-L ,or vice versa through heavy traffic, so thought staying closer in might be good. Thinking of 3-4 nights in Easter hols, so resigned to absurd prices!

Perhaps look at the Crowne Plaza. It's in a good position even if it is a bit old and tired - we always stay there ... going again on Saturday. It's about 15 - 20 minutes from the Corniche and Souk, about 10 - 15 minutes from the Grand Mosque. Do you mean Muscat City Centre mall which is out by the airport or Muscat old town around Muttrah souk area? These two areas are about 45 minutes apart.
