Thinking about going to Oman for a short break with DH and 2 year old DD.

Looking for a nice hotel with a good restaurant and ideally child friendly.

Anyone who has been..do you recommend going? Should we drive there? How long is the drive?

Places to visit? Where to stay? What to do?

Any advice would be appreciated.

i really wouldn't worry......the violent protests were in Sohar, yes you do drive through it but the roads are clear. Here in Muscat there are now daily 'pickets' with employees walking out and protesting outside their place of work. Yesterday you couldn't get into the InterCon or Shangri La with your car. Read more in Muscat Daily.......probably the most 'free' of all the media. I do a regular MCT-DXB trip and it takes me around 4 hours if border is clear.

Have any of you seen what's been happening in Oman recently? It won't stop us from driving through, in sh'Allah, in a couple of weeks' time but we do have concerns.

We went last weekend with the 2 yr 8 months DS and the 8 months DS. We got a package with Oman Airways for hotel and airfare, and chose the Grand Hyatt Muscat. The hotel isn't great for toddlers/babies. Hotel gave us an extra single bed for DS1, and we asked them to place the mattress on the floor since the poor kid would've fallen off bed. The room is a good size, bathroom fittings in good condition and the bed mattress is comfortable, which seems to be hit or miss for Muscat hotels. Food at the Grand Hyatt is awfully expensive, and the buffet had few options that were suitable for mashing up and feeding 8 month DS2. The drive is 5 hrs, can be 7 hrs if you hit traffic approaching or leaving Muscat (and there are ROUNDABOUTS on the main highway to deter speeding...). We tried the drive when DS2 was 4 months old, it was AWFUL.
