Ringworm dilemma

My neighbour has 5 cats which were originally indoor/outdoor cats but then they stopped letting them in and so they are just roaming around their garden and the other compound gardens.

Three of them now have bad cases of ringworm which I managed to catch from stroking them and also my indoor/outdoor cat has caught. I took my cat to the vet straight away (I didn't know what sort of skin problem it was) and he has been treated successfully with intrafungal and some horrid smelling black paste on the problem area. For me, I just used lamisil which cleared it up quickly.

I have spoken to my neighbour about taking 'their' 3 cats to the vet to get treatment but they have refused. In fact they were asking me to take responsibility for all of their 5 cats as they don't want them any longer :(

I will of course try and find them homes as they are lovely cats and extremely friendly but first I need to make them look good.

Here's the catch - intrafungal costs a lot (dhs300+) and my husband is already annoyed that I spend so much money on getting street cats de-sexed, and feeding street cats and now the neighbours cats. If I was working it wouldn't be an issue and I do understand where he is coming from.

So are there any cheaper alternatives for treating ringworm on outdoor cats that you know of. Or does anyone have any intrafungal that they don't need any longer?

Thank you

Hi JS, I was just thinking of extra ammunition to use in my 'discussion' with my neighbours. No matter what religion you are, to have any animal from a young age and then decide you don't want them any longer simply because you have lost interest is wrong. AdviceSeeker, thank you for the heads up on ABVC. I took one of the kitties there this morning to be castrated! In the meantime, if anyone does have any spare intrafungal I would appreciate it...

T J, I thought that the cats are posing a health risk to others that's why I suggested that maybe you have only the 2nd option.. But if this is not the case and you can help them without getting the infection then definitely helping them is the right decision. As for the neighbours, I am not muslim but most of my friends around me are, I don't think that putting animals to sleep is "Haram" as you are saying... well I can still ask out of curiosity but the answer seems simple to me.. they are putting cats and dogs to sleep everyday for different reasons so it is kind of clear to me.. Good luck and I hope you can help these kitties.

Found the below online, so there's a few home remedies you could try! So nice of you for helping these wee cats out, if they're not spayed/neutered yet ABVC is doing free neutering/spaying for strays in the month of march, so you've still got some time left to get them down there for that! Apple Cider Vinegar – Said to work like a charm! Simply dab some on each spot a couple of times each day for about a week. You can also use a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse after you bathe your cat. Tea Tree Oil – Dab on each spot a couple of times a day for about a week. Warning – NEVER use Tea Tree Oil on cats!! This is one of the most common remedies you'll find on the Internet, so it was important to mention it here simply for the warning. Raw Papaya – Rub fresh sliced fruit on the spots each day. Bleach – Mix bleach with water, 6 parts to 1 part, and dab on with a cotton ball several times a day. Valued for its drying effects. Warning – this can cause allergic reactions! It can also burn. Burning something with claws doesn’t seem like a great idea, and your cat could lick residue off and get sick. Grapefruit Seed Extract – Simply dilute it a little bit and dab it on. Clear nail polish – This is the same treatment as for chiggers. The goal is to suffocate the fungus. If you try this, make sure it is well dried before turning your cat loose. Garlic – Cut a clove of garlic in half and rub over each spot a couple times a day for about a week. OK, so I have talked to the vet that I took my cat to and he tells me to give the 3 cats the rest of the intrafungal that my cat was taking, also to use the sulphur shampoo 2 x a week, but that I would need to buy more intrafungal as it needs to be used for a month - 1 week on, 1 week off etc. He did say that if the cats are getting fed well the ringworm may clear up by itself but this would take up to 4 months. I should also bring them in if they visibly look sick (they don't). I also spoke to a friend who is a veterinary nurse at an SPCA centre in the UK. She said that one method they use is to spray a diluted mixture of Apple Cider Vinegar onto the infected cat and to rub it in. Even if they digest the diluted mixture it won't harm and in fact many dried cat food products have ACV in it. I don't think that the cats pose a big health risk as they stay within the compound and no-one else in the compound has outdoor pets. The only reason I caught it, I believe, is because I have a compromised immune system and unfortunately catch everything going! I will speak again to my neighbours. Perhaps if I tell them that the cats will be put down if they don't get medical attention they may reconsider as surely this is 'haram' in the muslim faith? To be honest, I have a big problem with putting them down and I would rather do all that I can for the 3 of them before making such a decision. I really don't want this responsibility but I can't turn my back on them either....

I am totally against putting animals to sleep unless they are unhealthy and there is no hope of a cure for them. If I see a cat on the street who is terribly sick and the vet said that the cat won't live for long then I prefer to put him to sleep instead of letting suffer on the streets. These cats are harming others, other pets and maybe kids, so unless someone can do the job of treating them, I think the 2nd option is to put them to sleep. This way at least they won't suffer.. I don't know, I am very confused and the whole situation is very sad.. If there is a volunteer who has a house free of cats and kids and is willing to do the job of treating them, that will be good, otherwise...

Oh ring worm is a big big problem in cats and it is very hard to get rid of...I suggest you contact the authority regarding this situation because it will be extremely difficult if not impossible to help those poor cats..

the problem JS is they have given you the cats. You cant leave them the way they are&gt; are you comfortable having them put down rather than leaving them on the street to fend for themselves? Sometimes we have to do what is necessary for the animals if there is no other way :( edited by SueB on 22/03/2011 <em>edited by SueB on 22/03/2011</em>

I like the idea of SueB going to visit their house with a big stick and I hope too that they are hit by ringworm !! I just don't understand how can some people treat animals like this. When I saw a small little sign on my cat's face of ringworm, I ran to the vet and it was a terrible experience, it was only one spot above the eye and the vet advised to wash the cat with a special shampoo every 2 days for 2 weeks (if I remember well), I paid a fortune for the pet shop to do the shower because I couldn't do it on my own, I had to change the bed sheets every single night and I was just sleepless at night because I didn't want the kitten to feel neglected and put her outside my bedroom and at the same time I was covering all my body while in bed coz I didn't want to touch the ringworm place by mistake while sleeping. 5 cats is too much, too much work and it doesnt seem reasonable that you do this job on your own. I wish I can help but I feel itchy already from the thought itself :(

The problem TJ is that they are outside and together so clearing it up might be impossible :(..they will keep reinfecting each other unless perfect hygiene is present :(. I would round them up and take them to a vet for another opinion of course and other suggestions. I know they can be boarded at a vets for the treatment but it will be about 1000dhm per cat (I might have that wrong, could be less). If the cats cannot get treated they will get very sick. If they are young enough to rehome and friendly it might be possible but, i doubt it and knowing they have ringworm and trying to treat them on the street is not a good thing. If there is someone who could make an enclosure for them and then treat them that might work but a month is a long time for them to be couped up. Maybe someone on here has other suggestions. But Gleek is right, if they are friendly and children are cuddling them that is not good. I only hope the family that kicked them out came down with a horrendous case of ringworm that they are unable to get rid of, especially in the lower part of their body.

See what a dilemma I'm in :( I am already fostering for FF so having the cats in the house is impossible as I simply don't have space. And I know that FF don't have any foster homes as they are full with many cats on the 'wait list'. The DM would definitely put them down and I'd hate for that to happen. My neighbours are totally irresponsible when it comes to animals. I don't think that they are poor as it is a lovely compound villa, they have 2 maids, and all of their children have cars. They only seemed to like the cats when they were tiny kittens but as soon as they got older they lost interest. They are still less than a year old. I guess that for the time being I will just try and shampoo them regularly and look into the 'dip' at the vets. I was reading on the internet about an injection for ringworm. Has anyone had experience of this?

That is terrible! Ringworm can be very terrible if left untreated, imagine if a child contracts it? Our daughter caught a very mild case of it when she was little after petting "our" street cats too. Very irresponsible of these neighbors! SueB, if nothing can be done (ie they still refuse, FF can help because of overcrowding or whatever), then what is the next step? I hate to say this, but is it a call to the DM to come and round them up? Obviously the DM probably won't treat them and they'll probably be put to sleep :(, but this is a health hazard to the public no?

oh tj, that is quite the work you have taken on :(. First of all, they will have to be (or should be) separated into at least lots of 2. They need to be kept indoors for about a month until it is totally cleared up. If their ringworm is that bad, cream will not do it alone. They will have to be washed at least 2x a week unless you can get a vet to do the dip, which is no pleasant for them but might be necessary. Their room should be able to be washed down with bleach, rinsed, and dried before putting them back in. This is a big job kiddo, especially for 5 cats. I would give feline Friends a call to see what they suggest. I highly doubt they can help in the care though as it is a big job for 5. The owners should be responsible for the care of these cats as the cats are spreading this to other cats and people who touch them. Please give me their address and I will go have a big chat wit a big stick. Are they very poor people that cannot afford to fork out the money for their care? They should be ashamed and hang their heads..especially if a picture of them as irresponsible pet owners should make it to the front page of 7 days lol.....
