200AED pp! Thanks for the tips on the accom- looks like we won't be going. Would rather spend the 400 on a nice meal in Fujairah or RAK thank you very much...

We went at Christmas but DH drove with DD & my parents and I flew. DH was charged 60 AED, DD was free because she was so small (18 months) and my parents were free because they had only been in the UAE for 10 days. I was charged AED 200 at Muscat Airport but was told I would have only been charged AED 60 if I had been with my DH. He is my sponsor.

As others have said, whether or not you are required to show your insurance for the car at whichever border, you will definitely need to have it with you. Can't remember how much the Oman visa cost last month but going again on Saturday (to Muscat) so will let you know (we have UAE residency visa in passports) when we return later next week ... if this is any help?

Yes, you do need proof of insurance. It depends on how the wind is blowing on that particular day as to whether or not they ask to see it. The visa fee is now Dh200 per passport. It has gone up dramatically. If someone told you the Golden Tulip is nice, you might want to consider that there are different definitions of "nice". The GT is okay and basically the only game in town. The Khasab Hotel is very basic and the GT is the next step up, but it is not luxury by any means. Service in the restaurant has been consistently terrible over the years. I've been told by a friend that the GT is already full for next weekend. If you decide to go to Khasab anyway, make sure you get to the border early. On the Prophet's (PBUH) birthday weekend I've stood in the Q for 3 hrs and that was only to get through the UAE side! Musandam is a great place, so enjoy your trip.

You definitely need car insurance for Oman - make sure you have it with you. We haven't crossed the border between RAK and Oman but to go Muscat way you definitely need to show it. And check with your insurance company, too. Have heard rumours that if you have third party only insurance it will be accepted but may not cover you for everything you may need in Oman.

Went two months ago and car insurance certificate was required. They didn't look at it, just saw the envelope in my hand and were quite happy with that! The price of the visa has increased - can't remember to what exactly but I think it's from AED60 to approx AED100.

Do I need to bring a car insurance certificate, and do we need to get visas at the border (how much are they)? Thinking of going there next weekend...also, has anybody already tried making bookings and had no luck? Heard the Golden Tulip at Khasab is good, any other recommendations? Thanks!
