Hello all..

Does anyone have any information on how to take a cat as baggage with EK to Nairobi? Previous experience.. what to do, what to expect, how to avoid the cat being quarantined? thanks so much!

If there are animals in the hold, then they turn on the heaters to warm up that compartment. When you fly as cargo, they're going on volume of space taken up in the hold, not just weight. When I flew my animals with EK they were fantastic, came to tell me they were loaded and the Captain had turned the heaters on etc.

thanks tiki for your reply.. sorry to hear of your hard time. What i heard from someone working in Ek (friend of a freind) is that you are allowed to travel with a pet so long as its not (with its cage) heavier then 30kgs. I know that cat will go in the hold, but what sort of temps/care is given to live animals there? im just trying to see if i can save some cash, as pet relocation company's have qouted me different rates, from 5000 to 7000aed...whereas if i go with her as excess baggage, my only cost will be that of the govt docs, pet health certificate and the IATA approved kennel...all come sto around 600aed... :( i really wnat to save this, but at the same time if someone thinks this will be a bad idea, i will sacrifice for my baby! edited by fluffypie on 28/03/2011 You're welcome, this forum if for that ! :) And no worries for the hard time, it's some nice stories to tell to my future grand children. lol ! She's now known as the most expensive cat of her generation (I have to add that at that time, she had already cost me a trip Dubai-USA-Domican Republic (where we lived before), as just when I was going in the car for the airport, she managed to open the cage via the grill on the top (I don't know how she managed as she is a tiny cat. She was so scared she got so strong !), so I had to cancel last minute my flight (and all companies are not as easy as EK), and waited for her 3 days, without success, then had to go, and come back 1 for 2 months later.... ah...great story this cat ! But I love her and I wouldn't have let her behind for nothing in the world ! What to do ? hehe. As per as pets in cabin : I really confirm it's a big no, and I really doubt that EK have changed their rules recently. The only animals accepted in cabin are falcons.

Just ask your airline or travel agent to check in "Timatic" as that will have all the details regarding the import of animals to individual countries.

The first thing you need to do is establish the regulations for Kenya. Do they allow animals to arrive as checked baggage, some countries do not, for example the UK and now the UAE. The airline you are booking your ticket with will be able to check that for you. If Kenya does allow it then you have a choice between excess baggage rates and cargo rates. The important thing to know is that the animal travels in exactly the same place once onboard the aircraft which is in a temprature controlled area of the hold. If you take a Pet as checked baggage you pay at excess baggage rates regardless or not if you have any other baggage. Hope that helps

Definitely, EK don't take cats in cabins. I wouldn't take the chance to have her/he as an excess baggage, and would check in Live Cargo. When I brought my cat from France to here, EK ground staff let me check her in as excess baggage. I then continued my process and passed the customs and waited for my flight. It's where the guy came to me and told me the cat can not leave as excess luggage.... So I had to organise everything, from where I was, as I had already passed the customs, I couldn't go back, neither, of course cancel my flight, etc.... So you can imagine the mess here (we weren't living in France since years- Paris was just a stop over, no family back there, etc...). I found a pet relocation, it wasn't that expensive as I've done already all the paperwork, and everything went fine then. And definitely, I wouldn't take my chance again on this one. My own experience though...

Hi chocs, any reason why its better as live cargo and not to have her go in the hold? No she will still go in the hold. But as I said you can check animals as excess baggage or book as cargo. Either way still goes in the hold.

Depends on the quarantine laws of the country, if it's mandatory you can't avoid it. As far as I'm aware you cannot take animals in the cabin on EK, they have to go in the hold. You can check them as excess baggage, but better to take them as live cargo, as you need to book well in advance as they will only travel one set of animals at any one time. Try Dubai kennels and cattery, they'll probably be able to help you out. But you'll need all you import and export permits as well as blood tests and vaccinations done and up to date.
