Has anyone here been an expat on census day before? I'm a little unsure of our obligations and just read an article about a big fine and criminal conviction for those who fail to fill in their form.

What do expats do? We no longer have a UK address and normally stay with my Mum when we are in the UK and use her address for correspondence still. I've looked at the census website and think that we don't need to do anything as we are away for longer than 3 months, don't own a house, and more importantly won't be in the UK on Sunday 27th March (when the census is taken). But should my Mum be adding our names to her form, or do we just ignore it and won't appear on this census?

If you were an expat in 2001 what did you do for the last census? Am I just worried for no reason? i.e we are out of the country, and don't need to do anything? I don't want to get into trouble!

TIA

ps - for any of you who may have census obligations and had forgotten it was this weekend, the web address is www.census.gov.uk

If you don't live in the UK you don't fill it in - simples as the Meerkats would say.

Hi - if you have a resident's visa here, then by default you are not a resident in the UK and do not have to complete a form. There's lots of Q&As on the official website: http://www.census.gov.uk/ in for those people who still have a house there that they don't rent out (not your Mum's address!) that explains it all simply. So ignore it and don't worry!

Hi, I dont think we need to register. We also use my mums address and I think if she put us down then she is likely to be told that she cannot get her normal benefits/discounts as the census would indicate that we were living there. However, I do not know the rules, so hopefully someone else can enlighten a bit further.
