Posted this on the Bahrain page as well, but the Dubai/NE page is so active and I'd love to hear some honest opinions.

My husband and I are hoping to move to Bahrain with our two DD's (2 and 3) in August. We've lived in Dubai, Sharjah and Qatar but are out of the region at the moment. I would love to hear your opinions of Bahrain. Do any of you have friends who live there now - what do they have to say about the place?

Yes, i would move and just make sure your contract is water tight and covers emergency evacuation and you are housed in one of the expat areas not in a local area or in the heart of Manama near the Pear roundabout. Agree! Amwaj Island is a lovely place to live, we lived there, so check that out!

Thanks for all the replies, ladies. Great to hear from some people who have been there or have friends of friends who are there. It is not easy to get the real picture from home - the media here have sensationalized the situation in Bahrain so much that we weren't sure what it would be like. You can imagine what friends and family are like - "Bahrain, isn't that the place I saw on the news with all that trouble..." disapproving looks all around. Grr.

Yes. lived there 5 years before moving to Dub in summer last. Have loads of friends can get you in touch. I agree contract has to be tight. BTW....after dub, will be quite boring for kids so be warned but on the upside its small , manageable easy-to-navigate. Most places are within a 15 min pleasant drive. My Dh just got back from Bahrain on a work trip and he can't belive how genuine and friendly everyone is. The media is hyping up alot of the stuff that is going on. He went past pearl roundabout everyday and there were families having picnics on the grass roundabout. He has work expat work colleauges that live there, and they love it. If you have been to Abu Dhabi, it's more like that then Dubai.

I've friends living there with young children and they are not planning to leave anytime soon. Ex-Pats generally live in areas away from the protests. However they have been pretty fed up with unplanned school closures although they seem to be open at present and also with the massive traffic jams caused by protests.

Given the current state of unrest I'd say NO! In general Bahrain is ok as a place, not very big, not a huge amount to do. I personally didn't find it a very interesting place.
