Jumeirah Lake Towers Dubai Metro station name change

Observant Dubai Metro users may have noticed a new sign and name at the entrance of the Jumeirah Lakes Towers metro station over the past few days.

Much like previous stations who have had their names changed – Dubai Marina changed to DAMAC Properties a few years back, for instance – it seems the Jumeirah Lakes Towers has followed the same fate.

This Red Line metro station has had a name change, and is now officially known as DMCC (in English), which is short for Dubai Multi Commodities Centre.

What is DMCC in Dubai?

The company behind the re-branded Dubai Metro station is the master developer of the Jumeirah Lakes Towers neighbourhood.

You might have heard of the company name a little while ago, when they successfully claimed a new Guinness World Records title for the world’s largest jigsaw puzzle by surface area – with a picture of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan on it.

The newly re-named Dubai Metro station joins several other metro stations that are named after companies in the city, rather than their location; including Nakheel, First Abu Dhabi Bank (which used to be First Gulf Bank) and also Sharaf DG.

Selling the naming rights of Dubai Metro

Dubai was the first city to sell the naming rights of its public transport system, the Dubai Metro, and cities such as New York and London have since followed suit.

Apparently, it costs around AED 40 million to name a station after a company or government department for 10 years, The National reported back in 2014.
