Hi

I know you use english plugs etc..... but just organising things for trunker & stuff to sell before we come over. A few questions - sorry if these sound daft?
TVs - do ones at home work over in dubai - or are we best to get new ones when we come over?
Furniture - is it dear to buy over in Dubai. Old one had better days - tempted to ditch but not sure on costs of new furniture over in Dubai? I've seen there is an Ikea, but what are other furniture shops like?
PC - again similar as before - ok to brink over, i.e due to software or better to start again?
Is there anything else thats hard to get in Dubai - when setting up a home, I should bring?, or is it easy to get most stuff?
cheers

We moved a cople of months ago and we brought everything....we had to throw a load of stuff out though as it didn't fit the house (too small or too old!!). Our UK funrniture looked lost so we had to buy lots of extra furniture...personally I found the costs of doing that reasonable. There are lots of places comprable to IKEA (who deliver and assemble here if you spend over 2500 aed)...Home Centre is one. I've found Debenhams here to be a great source of bedding. And yes, we did have to buy a new TV but only because ours was so old it wouldn't conect to the cable...the Etisalat guys thought it was hilarious that anyone had a TV that old! I'd recommend Carrefour for electrical stuff. Best of luck with your move

I would stock up on bedding, Only stock up on bedding if you are bringing your beds over because beds and bedding out here seem to be really odd sizes. None of our UK sheets fit our Dubai beds! We have found the furniture over here to be pretty good to buy and fairly well priced and suited to the size of Dubai properties. There is also an extremely good second hand market of really excellent quality stuff - check out www.dubizzle.com to see the sorts of things that get sold out here and the prices.

actually i think the hassle and cost of bringing stuff here offsets the gain over selection/price of buying here. also i do enjoy buying new time to time, and new country is new life. also, it feels good to travel home and use my old things and furniture in their own setting, back home. so, i would definitely leave everything and buy stuff here, but there is no justice in this, some prefer one way, others the other way. up to you, both works!

You don't say where you are coming from. UK/European stuff works as voltage is same. US/Canadian electrical goods won't work without adaptors. Most white goods here are from the eastern block so prices are good and voltage correct Almost everything you will want you can get here except for personal things like special tea/coffee/food brands.

We brought everything, DH's company paid for a container, so if it went in we brought it. Personally I would say everything is more expensive - white goods, furniture, toiletries everything except petrol! We brought our old sofas they had a little bit of life left in them, we're looking to update now but the choice is not as good as home (UK). I would stock up on bedding, clothes (especially shorts/tshirts/underwear), favourite toiletries (unopened) and bung them all in the container. We brought all our electrical goods too. Good luck with your move! Dubai is great ... but expensive!

Make sure you download Skype to your laptop and ideally, a VPN too. They are blocked here. Material stuff, not so important - you can get or organise most things. edited by holly on 11/03/2011
