Is this possible, we have issued a cheque as a guarantee and it appears that the project will not go ahead, can we cancel the cheque (like you can do in the UK)? And if it is passed for payment what would happen? We would of course inform the person that we had cancelled it, if it's possible.

Thanks in advance

You can't report a lost cheque unless you were the person who actually lost it. Our old mortgage provider lost our cheque - the big undated one which covers the full house plus mortgage etc etc. HxxC would not cancel it wihtout a police report. Police would not file a report because we did not lose it, the cheque was made out to the mortgage company and they required the company to send a representative to report the loss. The mortgage company refused to do this as the police required a passport copy of the "responsible person". The mortgage company issued an english letter saying the cheque would not be cashed and had been lost but the police also would not accept this as it was in english. They finally accepted an arabic letter on headed notepaper with the company stamp. This after 6 months. HXXC cancelled the cheque immediately once we had the police report but the paperwork says "if inadvertantly the cheque is cashed or paid iin then the bank has not reponsibility or liable and the customer is still responsible for all charges" or other weasel words like that. And they charged us 50Dhs! Hope this helps but basically it is not an easy process - explained to us by a police office as because so many people tried this route!!

hehe Izzy I can assure you my friend is not that silly. The cheque really was 'lost'. His issue was well and truely sorted and was in no way cancelling or reporting a lost cheque to get out of something. My statement was more along the lines of how one word allows you to do something that another word does not. But in this context it appears that you are advising the OP to report the cheque lost to the bank - this could have serious ramifications here.

My friend recently informed us that you can report a cheque 'lost'. Which technically cancels the cheque. However in his situation he wrote the cheque out aprox 4 months prior to calling up and saying it was lost. He was wanting to cancel it, but was told needed a police report then it was suggested that he could report it as lost..no police report. And if someone then cashes the "lost" cheque he will be in trouble.

The easiest way is to ask the person you gave the cheque to return it to you. No cost and no hassel, would that be possible?

As far as I know, you can't cancel cheques here. You need to ask the person you gave it to, to return it. If it's passed for payment, then it will be honored.
