For which age group are you looking? I work for Oxford University Press and we have some fantastic books that you can get online or through mcgrudys and Amazon etc. Have a look at the Project X series - they are themed and come in sets of 5 - two non fiction, 3 fiction. They are staged from 4 to 11 year olds. http://www.oup.com/oxed/primary/projectx/
The feedback from children has been great.
If you are looking for older ones, here is a list of our Rollercoasters - http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780198326779001000.do?keyword=rollercoasters&sortby=bestMatches
Also for the 11 years and under we do Fireflies which are non-fiction http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780198472520001000.do?keyword=fireflies&sortby=bestMatches

That's my work done for the day lol.
Anything in the Usborne series. These books are fantastic and very current. The majority comes with links to internet sites too, so it is more than a book - it becomes an interactive experience which is fun and learning rolled into one.

Click on the topics for an extensive list of the series. It also caters for a wide age range. You could pop into a bookstore and take a look at them and then order. Enjoy.
There are probably loads of sets like this around but when I was a child I was absolutely riveted by the 'Childcraft' series [by World Book'>. Beautifully illustrated/photographed, and full of fascinating info.
They're still produced [obviously updated!'> and come in a set of 15.

PS. I also looked and yes, they're available on Amazon [various editions'>.
Have fun, whatever you buy. :)
I'm thinking of placing an order from Bookpeople and possibly Amazon.
Are there any well written, clearly illustrated, books or series of books for children you could recommend? Could be on any topic - science, music, history, astronomy etc..TIA
