I've just been browsing the classified section of this site and was looking at all the posts for people looking for housemaids, as I too, will be needing one soon. I was horrified to see one lady offering a salary of Dhs 800. Is this normal or even legal? Isn't there a minimum wage requirement stipulated for Philippina maids - I know there is in Qatar (where I've lived for 7 years) although, of course, it is not always adhered to. I'm seriously shocked, I mean really..........800 Dirhams???

If you are employing a housemaid illegally, you not only risk getting the maid deported should she be caught, but also being heavily fined yourself - 50,000 aed or thereabouts .... It is a real risk as there is a new initiative regarding illegal house maids and a phone-in hotline to report illegal maids.

I am clearly being very generous to my 'maid' whom I also dignify with the title 'housekeeper'. She does 6 hours a week at my house - 3 hours on 2 days, and I pay her 900AED. She is SriLankan. sounds like you do not sponsor her, which is by the way illegal. and if you pay her 900 dhs for 6 hours work, why do you think that they all "work part time"! or you get her from an agency in which case they will charge you more anyways as they have to pay for the sponsor costs etc. <em>edited by busybee2 on 24/09/2012</em>

If you though 800aed was bad - many ethiopian maids here are paid around 660aed monthly. My neighbour is doing it and does not give the girl a day off. One family also recently offered to transfer me their maid who was on 650aed - also without a day off. They offered me to keep her under their sponsorship providing I didnt let her out of the house! Al Ahilya will also quote you 650 for an ethiopian maid.

Each nationality generally attracts a different salary. I have Ethiopian maid, she lives in a private bed/sit with own bathroom separate from our villa, I provide all her daily living requirements including clothes and personal items, she cooks, cleans, washes and irons as well as looks after 1 seven year old girl. I pay her 800aed per month. I do offer her one day a week off but after nearly one year with us, she has never taken her days off. Philippinas hsve better English skills and attract a higher salary but generally you can't trust them as well (from my experience). Hi Pattigb, I'm looking for full time maid also, and thinking to hire ethiopian. Are you using agency to get her? If so could you please share with me the agency contact details and the process/cost to sponsor her? Thank you very much for your valuable information.

Thanks for the clarification Admin - I agree with all you say. It's not a question of what is an amount they're happy with - it's a question of what I'M happy with. If I can make a difference to one family, and help them for a few years, then that makes me feel good, makes me feel I've made a difference. We can all go out for a meal, Friday brunch, whatever, and spend a few hundred Dihrams - so le'ts just stop for a minute and think what that equates to for a family in India, Nepal, wherever. It can make a huge difference. A little thought and compassion never goes amiss.
