I'd appreciate any responses from anyone who has had to move their child during their first few months of GCSE's.
There's a good possiblity that my DH's job will be moved from Doha over to Abu Dhabi around Oct/Nov. Our son is due to start his GCSE's in September and I'm having a panic attack already thinking about the upheaval to his schooling.
Here in Qatar there's a ridiculous rule that states that no child can start a new school until the beginning of the school year. Please tell me AD doesn't have the same rule?

The I/GCSE options he has chosen are fairly standard ones so I'm not concerned about the options. Did anyone have any problems with finding a place for Yr10?

It's a real pain when you can't co-ordinate the job/school change to be at the same time.

Yes indeed kimmc3 - I was in Doha for 7 years and absolutely LOVED it. Really. Made some fantastic friends there and was sad to leave. AD is so much easier in many ways, but I miss the craziness of Doha……. Oh, and if I can help in any way with anything, please just say the word :) edited by lulubaker on 06/05/2014

Most of my friends' children are at Brighton College and they're very happy with it. You might be lucky & get a place as you're only looking for one slot & in an older year group. Hope so! I moved to AD almost 2 years ago without the kids (all grown up now) - first move where we didn't have to worry about schools. SO much easier! Good luck. That's good to know - thanks lulubaker. Fortunately the school fees are paid for by the company, so it's just a case of finding a place for him. I'm looking forward to the day when I don't have school runs and moving around the GCC to deal with anymore! Only a few more years... You used to live over in Doha too didn't you?

a few people i know in bsak went to doha college Pearson? do you know them? I'm not familiar with the name, my son might know them. Lol - the Smartie Building, I've not heard it called that before! My DH is in electrical engineering - big Swiss company. Thanks so much for all the leads, much appreciated. I'll check out those schools and give a couple a call to see what our options are.

Thanks for the reply busybee2, I appreciate the help. I would definitely not take him out of Doha College until I had a place lined up in AD. We would be looking at Al Yasmina (in an ideal world!) or perhaps Brighton College, but I'd need to find out if there are any other suitable schools out that way - with a place of course. My hubby's office is in the round building on Al Raha Beach, so we'd be looking to live very close to there. I know how over subscribed the schooling is in the region (been here 10 years), people are having to home school here in Qatar as the situation is so dire! r yes the aldar smartie building.... construction perhaps?! yasmina ring them up they would be handy but all places are hard to come by. home schooling exists here too same same k12 tho. bcad very expensive but look at bisad in mbz and bsak which of course is the oldest brit sch here but in town.... and of course will be the same as the others oversubscribed. bisad may be a choice for senior years they often have places for some years worth a try to get over here but they do ib i believe so you would need to check. also you would need to check as i know at bsak most of the gcse's are not I the only one that was an IGCSE that i know of when my sons doing them is ict, but i would suppose it wouldnt really matter switching they will be very similar. also look at aldar al bateen seniors too but in town.

for your information the rules here are that once past 15th november you cannot switch curriculums and once you go past 15th february you cannot switch schools until next academic year.

It's a real pain when you can't co-ordinate the job/school change to be at the same time. ad has some silly rules, but they can start whenever there is a place. the issue you will have is getting a place. i would say to ring up the registrars and ask them. adec here require you to finish one year in order to continue etc, if you are out of school for more than 10 days or so they will not let you transfer etc. so dont come if you dont have a sch place. all the british schools have problems iwth big waiting lists, but mostly for the younger ones, but of course at critical year groups too there is no hard and fast rule. only way you will know is to ask the schools? where will your hubby be working/living etc
