Ok Ladies, tried searching other threads and could not find any tips on the driving tests that we have to do in Qatar. I have my first driving test on August 1, i did not attend any driving schools here i just got a cd and booklet from someone at my DH workplace. Is there anyone that can give some pointers and tips. I heard that it depends on the mood of the examiner which i witnessed today. This morning when i went to make the appointment there was a man standing behing me in line, he was asked by one of the examiners what he wanted to which he replied he wanted another chance. The examiner replied stating he only gave him one chance and he failed and he must go to school now. That was the end of the story even when the man tried to find out why he failed, the examiner just didn't want to hear it. Now i am nervous since they can just fail me for no reason and tell me to go to driving school. Any tips anyone?

Congratulations, loloatdoha and thanks again for the tips, JA! Quick question- is the traffic department open on weekends? I plan to drag DH this afternoon to sign up if it is :-)

Hi RDT, I went today for the second chance and happily I passed this time, and I really appreciate all the tips given by JA. So after a busy busy week moving and unpacking now I can celebrate the license. JA condensed pretty much all the process to schedule the test, but in my case they didn't give me the choice to pick any school, they just told me to go to Al Rayyan Driving School and the date, there only Thursdays are for women's test. I also read the info posted in Qatar living and the blog, and at the Madinat Khalifa office they provided me a pamphlet with the signs. Be relax, and take water with you and something to snack, I arrived at 5:30 am and left at 9:30! Good luck

It was no problem RDT. I know what it feels like when you try to get information here and and those who have and know the information requested can't bother or won't reply. I just hope it helps you out. Oh i just remembered for the road test the examiner might ask you to stop on the side of the road when he/she is finished taking you around the round a bouts . Just be mindful of where you are asked to stop cause sometimes they ask you to stop at bus stops, in front of an entrance to a house or compound or right after the round a bout which is a no no. if you are asked to stop in an area where you are not suppose to stop just inform the examiner that you are not suppose to stop there. He/she will tell you to go onn or that they give you permission to stop. This happenned to me and the rest of the persons on the bus i was on. It was also the main reason only 4 of us out of 25 passed the road test. Remember when you pull off the road you should be a cars length in width from the road, which that means when you open your car door you do not interfere with the traffic on the road. It's a lot of info to swallow but i am sure with all of this you will do well.

I don't know if i followed the correct procedures but this is how i signed up to do the test. First i went to the traffic dept in Madinat Khalifa with my hubby as my sponsor, had one of the guys at the small office just outside the compound type up NOC in arabic for my hubby to sign, they also did an application form for me as well (this service cost us 20QR). Took copies of my RP (card and visa in passport),bio data page of passport, copies of hubby's RP, had to show them my drivers license from my home country and walk with at least six passport pictures (they might need about 4 but because the paperwork passes through many hands and they usually staple them to the application they can sometimes get torn). I took an eye test in the building to left after entering traffic dept compound after which i went to the main building where my document was stamped and i was told to choose any driving school to challenge the test. I chose Al-khebra driving school that is located in Abu Hamour area behind the MES indian school ( I went there the same day after getting documents stamped at the traffic dept). To challenge the driving test you need to go straight to the examiners offices to the left of the compound (just ask in case it has moved) they will examine your documents and give you a date to come back to do the test. There is no driving manual online or that i could find, instead i took a pamphlet from the Al- Khebra school reception area that had the signs on them and i read all the threads on driving on the qatar living website. If you combine all the information from the threads in qatar living with the blog address below , combined with thorough knowledge of the road signs and a very humble countenance then you should be fine. Al-Khebra also has a CD that they give to their students, if you can get one of the persons attending the school to lend it to you then you should be more than fine and remember do not hit down any cones in the yard test.

Hi everyone, I'm planning to take the driver's test soon too but without taking any of the driving classes (as I drive back home). Just a few questions- how do I register/ schedule a driver's test? Also, any idea where I can read the driving manual online? I know I need to study all the road signs...

Thanks for the tips JA, very helpful. Indeed, if you have a valid driver's license from UK, Australia, GCC countries, and some others (haven't seen the complete list), you can interchange your license for the Qatari one without doing the test. For those who like me didn't win the jackpot of the right nationalities (I don't know which criteria they use, but funny enough in my country we drive on the right side), they will give you two chances of doing so without having to pay for the course. I failed today in my first attempt, actually I did the L parking perfectly fine but the instructor didn't see me (at the same time another guy was pointing and signaling to move forward quickly, I guess I was too quickly :) ). If you don't speak Arabic the hole experience could be very frustrating just because you don't have a clue about what is happening. If you know how to drive then passing the test is just about luck, I saw girls who were really nervous and didn't show very nice driving skills and they passed. It wasn't my lucky day, but hey, no pain no gain! next time I will make sure the instructor is actually looking at me ;) HTH

We didn't have to do driving tests to change over from UK drivers licenses. I'm prettty sure it isn't required if you hold a UK license - just forms, photos etc. Thanks!

Can someone explain what this is about? Do we need to take a driving test once we move to Qatar? I have a British licence and a UAE licence. Please don't tell me I have to take a driving test before I can get my Qatar licence????

You can get some information from this blog: http://dohadrivingtest.blogspot.com/p/al-khebra-driving-school-manual.html. I also read all the threads about driving test in Doha on the qatar living website. Make sure you know all signs especially the ones highlighted on the blog. The box parking is like parking at one of the malls and the L parking is basically box parking but with the parking area on a slope and your only way to exit is by reversing all the way out after you do a hill start. I was advised by everyone to be nice and mannerly to the inspectors especially on the road test. Oh, and on the road test use both hands to give the inspector your paper (just show a high level of humility). i hope this helps.

Hello! Maybe one of the girls who recently passed the test can give me lights on the parking parts of it? What should I expect? Some people gave me some tips just want to make it double clear, I'm going tomorrow morning and only got two chances to pass the test without the classes and I really don't want to take those! TIA

You're welcome. There's only one tricky sign that they ask, its the customs one - red circle with a thick black dash in the middle. Almost failed because of this one. Never seen it before on the road and I doubt I'll ever see it unless I'm driving through countries! Otherwise the signs part is pretty straight forward.

It really isn't very difficult but luck does play a big part in it! First part, they'll ask you to identify signs - about five of them. Then there's the parking thing and finally road drive. I completely agree with the drama thing - ex. when I got into the car with the examiner, the mirrors really didn't any adjusting but I DID spend a good minute or so adjusting them ;) Another advise would be to go there early and mingle with the other ladies and ask them about tips. Most of them have taken lessons and can offer tips on what to do - I think that helps a lot. I passed the test without lessons, so its not impossible - go ahead and try your luck! Oh...and be prepared to be there around 5:30 a.m :\:

Well, luck does matter ! I guess you know there are 3 rounds and I hope you are confident and comfortable with the parkings. That is where usually quite a few of the lot gets dropped off… The examiners expect to see the drama - like making sure you actually move your head to the left and right and up to the rear view mirror before turning, slowing, etc And mostly they will make you go through the min 3 day course if you flunk your 1st attempt. The training course is their USP and they try and make you spend money on training.
