Hi All,

So I've been in Doha 3 months now and have been offered a job but currently still on a family visit visa. Been told my husband requires 6 months bank statements before they can process my RP and then I can work under his sponsorship. The dilemma I have is: do I work under the company sponsorship or just wait 3 months until I can work under my husbands which I've been advised will be best. Can someone advise me on the plus and negatives of both?

I need to get back to the company today so no pressure! :(

Thanks ladies. Can I also ask, if I am under my husbands sponsorship and unhappy at work or find a better job elsewhere in doha, is it easier to move to another company? I've been told it's pretty difficult to get a release from your employer if they are your sponsor and if you do manage to succeed then you will not be allowed to work for any of their competitors?

I'm also under company sponsorship -- have been for 8 1/2 years (through 2 different employers). I currently do have a multi-exit permit, and it's a huge relief. At my previous position I didn't, and it caused a lot of stress. You might want to ask your new employer what their policy is. I know of a few who will provide it but not pay for it. The cost is QR 500/year -- so even if you have to cover it yourself, well worth it. One of the many ironies of life here is that while a woman under her husband's sponsorship can travel without an exit permit, a man under his wife's sponsorship sometimes does require one (the rule seems to be applied very inconsistently. I and a few of my colleagues sponsored our husbands at various points, so I have lived this one.

In addition to the points below, I just want to clarify that it is possible to get a multi-exit permit (renewed yearly by company- ask them if they would give this multiple permit and decide). I do not work under my husband's sponsorship and can leave at any time without any paperwork to be done.

If having 6 months of bank statements from a local bank were truly a necessity than there would be some people who would never be able to sponsor their spouses as they do not get paid through a bank here in Qatar. As for whether to remain under your husband's sponsorship or allow a company to sponsor you it is a personal decision but I know that many women choose to remain under their husband's sponsorship although it sometimes means that they will be paid a little less and is not entitled to all benefits that others under the company's sponsorship may have. The main reason cited is that a woman under her husband's sponsorship does not require an exit visa to leave Qatar. This means that if an emergency were to arise (whether back home or a political situation in the region) I would be able to get my flight tickets and board a plane as quickly as possible. To remain under your husband's sponsorship and work the company has to acquire a labour card for you which must be renewed annually which means having to get a Conduct Certificate/Police Background check from your home country each year. (Which can be a nuisance if you have lived outside of your home country for an extended period of time.) If a woman is under the sponsorship of a company then she requires an exit permit from the company allowing her to leave the country. Some companies are more forth coming with exit permits and will process them in a speedy manner, others not so much. Really it is a personal decision, but for many the ability to exit the country quickly if necessary outweighs everything else.

Hi jdcgl We have asked HR and they have said it has to be 6 months. They have tried for others too in the company and it's always rejected unless you are very high up in the company. Thanks anyway.

Hi sandy82, I don't know about which sponsorship would be better. I just wanted to let you know that my husband sponsored us with three months bank statements. J
