Elegance123- hi, I have no idea about the qatar academy Sidra, sorry, 14,000 I think would get u a 2bed apartment on the pearl, or 3bed villa in areas like duhail, gharaffa, al luqta. i am near pearl, there is another forum called Qatar living, forum based, you can ask people on there about the areas u have in mind. Get in touch when your here, good luck with it all.
AMI0802- hi, yes that would be good, one day next week convenient? Lagoona mall, city centre?
Hi Doha mum1
Thanks for ur reply. I was just about to ask about the tawa lol, im glad i can find one easily there.
Yes I am from the UK also, british muslim. Would be great to meet up when i arrive. Could be anytime in the next few months.
Dont mind me asking but what area are you living in, as you mentioned theres a lot of indians near you. Also, what kind of accomodation would 14,000 qatari riyal get us. Anyone with any reviews on Qatar academy sidra and accomodation nearby that school?
Hi- Elegance 123, you will have no problem finding spices, etc you will easily get. We shipped our pans etc over but you can buy, depending where from Carrefour supermarket is quite reasonable, I bought 'tawa' the other day! Im British Hindu, been here a few months now, have met lovely bunch of people but non british Asians, there are a lot of Indians from india but still looking for the British ones, its always nice to know people who do things similarly culturally. Are you from UK? Qatar is not like Dubai, you can get taxis easily here, I use private car hire as more reliable than the company from government. My husband had his visa with 2months, but have heard some companies take longer/quicker. Message me once you here, if you would like to meet up.
My hubby waited 8 months for his visa. I still havent been sponsored and Ive been here over a year...
Carrefour have a large selection of fresh spices, that are weighed to your needs. Quite cheap too.
Doha is absolutely nothing like Dubai!
It's impossible to say how long your RP will take, for some it's quick and others have to wait up to 6 months before they can apply for their family visa. It depends on your employer and who the Qatari sponsor is.
As you mentioned the resident visa, how long does it take approximately? Hubby has been told it can take between 3 to 6 weeks. He needs to apply for my visa once he's in Qatar.
I've been to Dubai for a holiday but never paid any notice to what living in the middle east may be like. I suppose I can get a rough idea from Dubai I suppose as I can tell from the traffic and driving experiences people seem to be mentioning. It was mad in Dubai so im assuming to expect same in Doha.
I don't want to lie and say its been easy, the whole process of getting the resident permits is long and can be frustrating. But once your settled and working (thats if you intend to look for work) you will be fine. Is it your first time in the Middle East?
Doha is fairly small so it shouldn't take long to get to your destination but the traffic can be a nightmare! Yes taxi's are available and you can also get a driver. That's what most people do here. Eventually I'm sure you will end up getting a car as it just makes life so much easier. There's no other reliable transport here I'm afraid.
Do u feel it's been easy to adapt to Qatar and seem to settle ok? It will be a great change from the UK especially the weather lol. At the moment we have 4seasons in one day!
Is it easy to get around places in Qatar. Is the main means of transport taxi's?
People tend to live where it is easy to commute to work and schools because the driving is so atrocious. I think I read the other day that in a city of 2 million people there are something like 900,000 Indians, so there is no one area to speak of.
Thanks for your reply, very much appreciated.
Sorry one more question, which area is mainly dominated with asian indians? We might be living in the Al rayyan area, not so sure yet. But i dont have any clue what to expect in doha. Also is there an area which id most popular with British expats?
Ok when you come to Doha you will be laughing at yourself for asking this :)
Doha has a *massive* population of Indian expats. Indian spices are freely available (usually in massive bags) pretty much everywhere. I have heard some people say the quality of some of the pulses is not that good but they seem fine to me.
Utensil wise, depending on what you need, you will probably find it cheaper to buy at home and ship out (if you're not paying shipping). Things are available but quality tends to cost.
Hi there,
I will be moving to doha in a month or two from England, UK, as my husband has been offered a job at the sidra medical hosp.
I was wondering whether anyone knows about shopping for indian spices ? Are indian spices readily available in the shops or only found in a particular area or not at all? Also can utensils be bought at cheap reasonable price (like pots and pans) or would it better to ship some of these to qatar (we get some allowance for this).
