Hi please help,
We are moving to Abu Dhabi in time for the start of term in September. My son is currently in yr 9 so will be in year 10 in September. The thing I am concerned about is him being in a class were there are only a handful of kids. I have already read loads of posts from 'bored' teenagers saying there are hardly any teenagers in Abu Dhabi and nothing to do. I'm sure this isn't true but it would be good to know about class sizes and any school recommendations would also be useful. Hope you can help. Thanks Jo

JoJo7, so did your hubby get the job? Yes Georgie he did! I'm so excited. Didn't find out til yesterday. God I've got so much to do now. Told my big boy last night, he's really up for it which is a relief. Telling the olds tonight and the 5 and 6 yr old tomorrow. X

Thanks for your message. I am so nervous / excited. It's been over 2 months since he applied for this job, seems like forever. its what its like, its all good practice for when you live here, and see how differently things work here, also wait until ramadan and then see things slow down even more!!!

Nooooo, I hadn't heard that there was nothing for teens to do. I hope my older lad doesn't see this, he's already less than thrilled about the imminent move. Although all he does in the UK is hang out at home or a friend's house and play computer games. They sometimes go outside to kick a ball about but not often! Anyone (BusyBee you've been there long enough!) know when the dust settles on this school lark? Ie do all schools communicate their place allocations on a set day, then see who hasn't gotten a place, and which schools have space? JoJo7, all the best with your husband's job offer; mine came through last week so now it's all systems go go go!

Hi Jojo7..... I will be moving to Abu Dhabi with my year 9 boy (year 10 in September) and his two siblings end of June. I have got him (almost) in RAHA international school. School looks nice, interaction with staff perfect so all will be fine. My son is not happy since he will have to leave his friends in Dubai behind, maybe we can meet up and see if the two get along? dxb is only up the road though...... It would be great to meet up. I've got everything crossed, hope my hubby gets the job.

Hi ladies, haven't been on here for a couple of weeks,I didn't realise I had a few replies, thank you. I haven't heard of RAHA. We have applied to al Yasmina and BSAK and I am trying to decided whether to apply to Brighton college. I'm not convinced that my 14 yr old will pass the entrance test. We final out on Wednesday if hubby has definitely got his job and we have decided not to tell the kids till we are certain. I not looking forward to telling my 14 year old as i dont think he is going to be very pleased with the idea. It's a difficult time to move especially when you are so full of hormones! How old are your other 2 kids jojojo? And where are you originally from? Have your other kids got school places? I'm finding the whole school thing quite stressful. I seem to be in quite a good position in that my big one can get a place and this pushes the other 2 up the waiting list but I'm not sure what I will do if they other two don't get in at all?

Thanks Jo this would be the case if you put them in an arabic local school, which yasmina isnt. all the brit schs have like 40 odd different nationalities, and of course if there is over 100 in a year group there are bound to have "teenagers" here as well. the only difference here is that you are a little bit more restricted in the hotter months for outside stuff to do, and if kids spend all day on the tv/ps3 it can be a little bit boring, but auh is opening more stuff to do, although its taken them far too long imo..... there really should be a lot more stuff indoors for them to do.

Thanks that good to hear. I was thinking about Al Yasmina and they do have space for starting September......but I am open to suggestions. We are hoping to get out for a few days in a couple of weeks so we can have a look round. I've got 2 other younger kids and think it would be nice for them to be in the same school but not if it isn't the best place for an teenager. All advice gratefully received. yasmina is a good school. no different to any of the others really. you may not have a choice, as you will have to go with where ever the places become available, its one of the few schools that you can have all three ages in at the same time so makes it much easier with moms taxi runs etc.

Tell your son not to worry, there are many many children in the UAE from every country, culture and religion you can imagine. There are waiting lists for schools!!!!!!!! You son will make some wonderful friends here from many parts of the world.

Thanks Jo what not a lot of teenagers here in abu dhabi, rubbish, who told you that. i have a year 9 presently so there is at least one....! what school are you going to, the class sizes vary depending on the school, but in the brit schs they are usually like 22 in senior etc.
