and received an email from a well traveled (older) relative strongly advising to reconsider and go to Italy. She said people are rude and not many people speak English among other things. It is just my DH and I to celebrate my 40th and had been a toss up between Paris and Italy. Has anyone been there and can reconfirm the lovely romantic Paris I had in my head 10 minutes ago?

I visited many areas of France not even 6 months ago and received nothing but fantastic service, assistance and care! I was very sick at one stage and even when the pharmacist could not understand my basic and broken attempt at french, we managed to do the usual foreigner+local song and dance and laughed about it the whole time. BUT I also visited Italy in the same trip and found it breath taking! So.. I think its up to you. Both places are phenomenal.

I didn't find them at all rude-find they have a fascination with all things Australian-even me!!!!!! I guess you can find rude people anywhere but we have had some lovely trips there-and the best food! Hopefully they will find us interesting being Australian! And as you say there are rude people everywhere...... It is our first holiday (or night away) together in 6 years that does not include children or step children. Just wanted it to be 'perfect' as it will be a while before it happens again.....

I think Paris is overrated, but if you've never been there, you should go at least once. I prefer Italy!.
