It depends upon nationality. I have an Ethiopian maid. She works very hards, fits well into our family and our home. She started at 800 per month. I have now increased to 1000 per month. This is an acceptable salary for any maid - ethiopian, Indonesian, Sri Lankan, Indian, etc, depending up her duties, experience etc.
Of course, we provide room with ensuite, all her food, toiletries, personal items, phone card, etc as well as little extras along the way.
I think Philippinas often want a little more but, in my opinion, they are not worth the trouble they cause.
I think this is quite a harsh statement on Philippinas in general...not fair! You perhaps have had or heard of a few bad experiences on them, but I do not think one may generalize like that. There are enough stories of exactly the opposite. Love you mrs B,but sorry!
We have a fantastic Sri Lankan maid who we pay 2,000 a month plus 500 for food. We also give her a months salary once a year as a bonus. Most my friends pay about the same - the lowest being 1500. We found her through my friends maid. The most important thing is to get references and speak to them rather than trusting a written reference. Good luck :)
