Hi

Just looking for a bit of advice/information who may have been in the same boat as me in the past.

I moved to Dubai in January this year and I have been looking for work since then, any administration/secretarial type work. I am registered with a few agencies and have been for a few interviews but always get the same feedback "they really like you but are looking for someone with local experience".

Has anyone else had similar experiences but gone on to find work??

Anyone got any tips on how I could improve my chances of finding work?

I do have 10 years + admin experience in the UK so it's not that I lack experience.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks for your replies. Funnily enough I got a call to do some temp work this morning! However it is only very short term temporary so I will act on some of your suggestions next week. I have applied for a few on the EW website without much luck. I don't feel quite so bad now knowing that it has taken other people a while to find work. Thanks

Hi Dundee, Welcome. I arrived in January, like you, two years ago and didn't find work until that August. I'm currently on my third job here and I have to say it is a lot more difficult to get a job without local experience, but you can get there. Make sure you also keep an eye on Dubizzle (although you do have to wade through some wierd stuff!) and use resources like Monster Gulf and Gulf Talent. More and more companies are trying to cut their recruitment budget and so are going direct rather than through agents. I also joined the Dubai PA Club on Linked In and there are often jobs that come up there too and there are networking opportunities if you join. Good luck with the search and just ask if you have any questions. FFx

hi Dundee, to be honest working in the UAE and UK is very, very different, especially in Admin / PA roles. When i first came to the ME, albeit Saudi, it took me at least 6 months to "get" how things were done here, and it's very frustrating when you come from the UK. Drop me an email on [email protected] and i will send you links, email addies to the people that i am using (also looking for a PA job).

Very often jobs are filled by personal referals - get out there and make some friends. The market is full people with local experience already so you need every bit of help you can get. Good luck!
