A bit freaked out

Came home from work, opened my flat, went in, got changed etc, went out, locked door. Came home 1 1/2 hours later - my key literally didn't fit in the lock. Convinced security to use the master key to let me in. They told me that key definitly wasn't for my flat. Showed them my spare key which was inside (which fitted in the lock) - it had a matching serial number. I couldn't convince them that the key on my keyring was for my door. There is NO way it could have switched on my keyring with another key - I only have x2 - car and house.

I'm quite freaked out. I feel as if my key has magically been switched. Despite the serial numbers matching my spares it seems to be of a different width to my other keys. Live on my own and scaring myself slightly.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?! Or anyone have any logical or reasonable explanations...?

I just popped out to get petrol and go the supermarket - so it wasn't. Thanks though. I'm going to do a quick patrol of my house just for peace of mind.

If your key was exposed to very high temperatures it may have expanded? Hope you solve the mystery!

I was at the doctors surgery and had them with me the whole time. However, I'm going to call a locksmith cause it's worrying me. Thanks for advice. I would be getting a locksmith too as its just bizarre, but if the spare key is working, then it really is just something wrong with the key on your key ring... so strange though!

I was trying to tell security, there was no way my keys could have changed - it was on my key ring. They just laughed at me as if I was the village idiot and told me it was black magic that must have mysteriously changed the keys as the one I was trying definitely wasn't for my door. I'm driving myself nuts comparing it to the spares. It mostly looks the same, but wider.

Wait, both spare key and key on your key ring have the same serial number, and the spare key still works on the lock but the other key doesn't? Is it possible the key expanded or bent? or did a part of it chip off? If the spare key still works on the lock, then the lock hasn't been changed, and if they keys have matching serial numbers then they haven't been changed... Also, did you leave your handbag or keys alone at any point?

It sounds suspicious. Have your keys been out of sight? Were they somewhere where someone could swap them over? Anyway, call a locksmith right this minute and get those locks changed.

My house has a latch on the inside, so I can't test. Security said it's impossible that it's the key for the front door. It definitely is! But it won't even go into the lock. As if it's grown!!

if YOU want... sry Can you stay at a friend's tonight? Could someone have switched your locks? I would barricade the door tonight if you can't leave anymore or can't stay elsewhere.

If want I can provide you with a number for a trustworthy locksmith. He'll come and fix a nightlatch for you which you can lock from inside. No key outside.
