hi! A good friend of EW has a bestselling book under the same title! Ms Parfitt is such an inspiration, you should check out her blog and find out when she's visiting Dubai again! www.joparfitt.com. A friend of mine who attended the workshop with me runs an online store selling abayas and she makes beautiful floral arrangements! There is a market for native speakers in the area of ELT, most definitely!! What I can suggest at this point is for you to create a website of language teaching resources. You can produce your own sample lesson plans, worksheets, interactive language games etc. Once it's up and running, you can sell your program to schools! Or charge a nominal subscription fee. It would also be a nice addition to the expat writers world if there is a platform for (expat) young writers to submit their stories online and you could manage an online magazine and be the editor yourself! so journalism so far - any others? Waxmuch - glad to hear you have recovered. hope your injuries were not sustained whilst working - apart from war correspondence, I would not expect it to be a dangerous career - though 'ambulance chasing" !!

Hmmm, even with a journalism degree I've been struggling to find freelance writing work here for the past year! Maybe I'm just not meeting the right people! Have even offered to work for free on Saturdays but still no takers! Did we exchange emails back when I was working full-time? Approached editors personally [by phone; not just sending your CV'>? I hope you find something soon ... and while you're 'waiting', start a blog! Hmmm, even with a journalism degree I've been struggling to find freelance writing work here for the past year! Maybe I'm just not meeting the right people! Have even offered to work for free on Saturdays but still no takers! Hmm. Interesting. I didn't have any difficulty getting freelance work offered by one of the main papers out here, but that was mid-2009, after which I broke my leg, had three ops etc etc ... !!! The 'career' took a bit of a back seat then. :D

Freelance journalist. Not that, ahem, I've been doing much of that lately! But it IS possible to find work as a freelancer with broadsheets, magazines etc if you talk to the right people. You can work in any number of fields too; travel writing, food/wine, marketing/media, business writing, even 'ambulance chasing'!! You don't necessarily need a media studies or journalism degree [most newspapers expect a degree of some sort though'>, just a willingness to work, chase stories and of course, the ability to write well is fairly important! It's certainly a 'career in your suitcase' though. Good luck. :)

Who has a career that you can take with you if you have to move to another country? Have you retrained, particularly through distance learning, so that you have a flexible career/job that you can pack up and start again in your next posting? I am interested to hear anyones thoughts/suggestions on good areas to work in that you can be flexible on working hours and location. I am thinking of using my spare time to train/study for a new career but it would have to be distance learning, in case we move on unexpectedly.
