Cat keeps peeing on the sofa...

Hi Ladies, our cat (1 of 2 indoor cats) who used to use the litter tray very well has now started to pee more regularly on our sofa. When we arrived in Dubai 6 months ago she did it the first time and we thought perhaps its stress from the move. It got better and very rarely did it again. Since the first time she peed on the sofa, we started to cover it with plastic sheets over night and when we are out of the house, just in case.
Now she seems to do it every night while we are asleep and we do not understand why... we know she is healthy as we did a full check up recently at the vets and she is in great health. We both work full time but have good hours so its not as if we are away all day and she gets lonely... nothing major has changed recently...
Since we can't seem to figure out why she is doing it... is there anything we can do to stop it? Perhaps a spary or something they dont like the smell of?
Any advice welcome as it's getting very frustrating.
Thanks!

it really is amazing that sometimes the simplist things work lol. lets hope it continues. At one point and guy who adopted one of mine had 4 bowls of food...one on the bed, one in the closet, one on guest bed and one in the bathroom lol....kitty finally got the picture after a week and the peeing stopped so fingers crossed.

Thank you ladies for all the ideas. SueB you are a genius! The food trick is working so far, 2 nights and not a drop! Here's hoping it lasts... Thanks! edited by Sunseeker123 on 16/03/2011

I've also used one of my perfumes to keep my cats off a particular piece of furniture, not necessarily for peeing, but generally to keep off ...worth trying if SueB's excellent food idea does not work, which by the way, works very well with kittens I've tried it on, thanks Sue :):)

I use apple cider vinegar to keep my cats away from certain areas. They hate the smell! Just mix some vinegar with water and spray around the area. Do this regularly for a few days and once they stop going there and you can stop spraying. You could spray on the plastic sheets at first and then, if you have tiled floors, spray the tiles around the sofa.

Thanks SueB. It was always on the cushion and then we bought a new sofa last month and started covering it with plastic sheets from the begining. So there was never any pee on this new sofa. But recently she keeps peeing on the plastic sheet that's covering the cushion part. This morning she managed to pee throgh the sheets and a bit got on the cushion! Will definatelty give it a go with putting the food there, never thought of that!

is she peeing on the cushions? or the arm/back??? if it is the cushions, remove them. The vets have a cleaner for urine, I forget what it is called though. She will pee in the same place becauser of the smell. You need to get rid of the amonia smell and it might have gone through to the foam, which might have to be replaced. Put a bowl of food where she pees and see what happens. They wont pee where they eat. give it a try.
