Dear All,

I have just joined this forum as we are in the process of relocating to Dubai by the summer.
I am really seeking your advice/thoughts around Compounds vs. Independent Villas.
Pros & cons?

We have been looking at Villas (independent & compounds) in Al Barsha/Umm Suqeimm (sp?) and Jumeirah.

We have lived in both compound and villa. Must say the villa life was much better for us as some neighbours in our compound would start parties at 11.pm and finish at 4 am, also we would get disturbed a lot by barking dogs as our neighbour had two yappy dogs and never told them to be quiet. Evenings were always noisy with kids playing, I have kids of my own and don't object to kids being noisy and enjoying themselves but the screaming really got on our nerves when we wanted to enjoy a quiet meal after a hard days work. Having said all this, if you get bad neighbours where ever you live it impacts on your own enjoyment. It really is a lottery!

I lived in a compund villa when I first moved here and really enjoyed it. My child could happily run around with the other kids and it was a lovely mini community. sadly our neighbours left and a couple moved in without kids who constantly complained about the noise the kids would make whilst they were playing / swimming ! They would also complain when when a few of us would hang our washing out saying that it destroyed the look of the area :( If you are lucky and have good neighbours it can be lovely but as said below, if you dont have nice neighbours then it can be difficult !

we lived in a compound for a few months and now are in a gated community. if you're in a gated community you have the benefits of the independent villa and in many cases a public pool like in the ranches. I personally like my privacy and my own yard.

Living in a compound is great if you have kids. they can play with neighbours kids in a safe environment. if you don't have kids, then independant villa may be better.,

Hi. we have lived in a couple of compounds during our 30 years in Dubai, but now live in an independent villa. I would say a compound is a lovely way to meet people, great for children to play with other children, you get invited to parties and its very sociable. Now we have a good circle of friends, we are happy in our own villa, and of course we are a lot older and don't socialise so much. Good luck with your move to Dubai.

Pro's of compound: - they have pools with costs shared amongst tenants - you can become friends with neighbours easily Con's of compound: - you are stuck with neighbours even if you don't like them - can get noisy at the pool while your neighbours' children play/swim or they have their parties - hygiene level of the pool depends on the hygiene level of your neighbours
