I want to go to Hatta for a night but my visa has expired and the new one is not done yet. I have my passport in my possession so I know it wont be done in the next few days.
I do not have an Emirates id card. So my question is do they really stop people and ask for id
I have been a few times but not recently and have never been stopped. Have they begun to stop people?? Have you been stopped???
I really really want to go!

Yep - just went there this last weekend and was asked for passport. but since I didn't bring mine (on visa process) AND they didn't see we had a baby in the back, the sight of two passport was enough. However on our way back, LO was awake, so I had to show my Labour card (luckily I still hold my 'old' one)... wonder what they would have done if I was only able to show them my driving license..... I only had my DL and they took it, asked us to pull over and umm'ed and ahh'ed over it for a while, gave it back then let us carry on.

They will accept your Emirates ID card if you don't have your passport. They're a bit funny about driving licences as ID and might have you hanging around for a bit whilst they check it out, but it will be ok. But I'd take your PP if you have it. We went through 4 check points there. Some check, others don't, it really depends what mood they're in.

Yes you do. There's something that's colloquially known as the UAE doughnut on the way out to Hatta where you leave the UAE, drive through a tiny Omani enclave, then out the other side into the UAE again. This has been rigourously policed in the last few months. I expect an ID card would also do the trick, but I wouln't risk going without a passport personally.

In Sept we went to Oman via Hatta, they did not ask for a passport at the first checkpoint. A few weeks later we were taking my brother in law to Hatta and we had to return to Dubai as we did not have our passports and they would not let us past the first checkpoint without them. I can confirm you will need your passport to go to Hatta. <em>edited by cayrunner on 06/03/2011</em>

Yes, we were stopped and were asked for our passports on New Years Eve. They specifically asked for passports and were not interested in UAE driving licenses as ID. DS is on a school trip this weekend and will be heading out towards Hatta and they have been told they will need passports.
