Have carless days in NZ, different from when we were kids and had carless days because of the oil situ, but. Everyone is encouraged to ride bikes, take the bus etc, big free breakfasts for cyclists in CBD's, great fun and a very cool initiative to try and provoke a catalyst for change...all very cool. Better than sitting back, doing nowt and whinging about it.

It doesn't matter if you turn off your electric to save the Earth or a couple dirhams. It's the fact that you are aware enough to do it. And in the end everyone wins. Initiatives like this aren't perfect, but they hold an important place in building momentum for change.

And when the hour is up and EVERYONE switches their lights back on at the SAME TIME, that will put more pressure on the power stations than normal what a load of rubbish whoever thought of this idea! yes, and the more people who think like this, the more likely it is they will think about their power usage. How incredibly defeatist. It's a global initiative that makes people think and participate...poo poo it if you like. i will 'poo poo' it If they had a 'dont drive you car for a day' how many people do you really think would participate? Barely any, because it would be an inconvenience. Turning the lights off for an hour, makes no difference to ones day. And im sure if everyone didnt drive their cars for a day it would make much more of a difference than turning the lights off for an hour So im not a defeatest as you so branded me. I am realisitc that actually the things I already do make more of a differenc than turning a flippin light off for an hour

There were so many candlelit events around town over Earth Day on Saturday, I wonder if this really defeats the object, how did all those people get to the events, unless they walked there Co2 emissions would be increased from all the vehicles on the road. And for those who stayed home and lit a candle they may have done better to just keep one eco friendly bulb on instead. Most candles are made of paraffin, a heavy hydrocarbon derived from crude oil. Burning a paraffin candle for one hour will release about 10 grams of carbon dioxide while an eco friendly bulb will emit only 5 grams per hour resulting in double the C02! Earth Hour is purely symbolic and achieves nothing if its celebrated in this way.

It's totally ironic and typical Dubai that the race is at the exact time of Earth hour. What to do?
