I'm about to sell our car on Dubizzle- has anyone got any advice for me?
I'm assuming taking a cheque is risky as it may not clear, so what do people do?
Also how long did it take to sell it. We've got a Prado so I'm assuming it will go quite quickly as they seem very popular (nearly wrote common!)

Get A LOT of calls regarding it, but no one wants to pay the price for it. They all want it cheap.. We have been given sooooooo many excuses as to why we should knock 30k off the price

Thanks- this is all very helpful (and slightly scary!) We do have a quote from the garage on what they are willing to pay so that should help us with the price. Good point re test drive- I never thought about insurance problems. Also a cash deposit makes good sense and will hopefully deter time wasters- of which I've had many over the last 2 weeks on Dubizzle! All your help is appreciated at what is a stressful time for us. x

Also, there are a lot of buyers who are insistent upon a "test-drive". If you agree to a test-drive, establish some rules: Check their driving license, only allow them to drive in a parking lot and sit in the passenger seat. They may crib a bit but don't budge and point out the obvious insurance-ownership issues in case of an accident during "test-drives".

We have just sold ours via dubizzle and we did list our number, i figured if people are keen they will call. Within 1 hour of listing we had a call who came immediately to our apartment block, dont really see the problem is viewing at home we live in a very safe country, the chap made an offer and came a day later with his wife and children. Being the UAE it took time as he got a bank loan to pay for it, but it was very straight forward, once we had agreed a price he paid us a cash deposit. The worst bit was he tranfer process, it took hours! I think as long as the price is right it will sell and there are good honest folk out there! Its just finding one who wants your car!!

Ive sold 2 cars in the 8yrs I have lived here. Both have been bank financed and is a weird experience (being a brit we exchange cash for car at the same time). On both occasions the car was fully financed by the buyers bank and I received an original letter signed, stamped and dated by the bank guaranteeing I would receive payment within 3 to 4 days of the car being transferred to the buyer. A bit risky but I had the passport copy of the buyers and the letters and I checked the process out with my bank and its quite normal. Dont forget to also cancel your Salik and also you can get a refund on your cancelled insuramce pro rata. I sold my last car one month ago and on Dubizzle. Yes there were the usual idiots, but I recommend add as many pics of inside and outside of the car as possible. Be honest in your description as it saves the hassle later when someone views your car. State that you are not in a rush to sell (even if you are), I was lucky as I was given a company car. Stick to your minimum and dont go under it. Def get a car dealer to give you an idea of what they would buy it from you for. Regardless, your car is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay for it. And if you want to sell your car above others with the same, you need to lower it a little below to ensure its a bargain. Good luck, and trust the UAE banking system if someone does have finance. I got paid easily both times though a little scary waiting after "giving" my car away!

We just listed all 3 of our cars on dubizzle. Do yourself a favor, do not list your phone number. This will help deter many many idiots. NEVER let them come to your house to see the vehicle. Meet them in a public area close to YOUR house. Do not go out of your way to show them the car. This will also help deter the idiots and non serious buyers. Weed through your emails. Eliminate anyone saying they will buy it site un-seen right now if you lower the price by such and such amount. These are not serious buyers. If you decide to accept a a check, take the buyer with you to HIS bank and cash the check. From the bank go directly to the RTA to transfer the vehicle out of your name, and release yourself of all liability. And FYI we haven't had anyone flake us off on coming to see ours. However, we tell them flat out that we will give them an hour to get from wherever they are to the Ranches. If they do not show up in that time frame they can forget about coming at all as we will not have our time wasted. edited by bornconfused on 10/03/2011

Be prepared to be given ridiculous offers and rude emails! Only take cash, and take a deposit if someone says they want the car. People don't come when they say they will so don't plan anything else on the day you want to show the car. Don't sign any paper work at the RTA until you have the cash in your hot little hands. I was selling a 2003 hatch back in 2009 and the person who said would take it and gave me a deposit said just before were were about to sign the paperwork oh I thought your car was 2007 not 2003. I want to pay less! I was like seriously lady who sells a 2 year old car for AED11,000 if you don't want it now for the agreed price then I'll keep your deposit and sell it to the other person who wants it. She quickly changed her mind and gave me the cash. Goodluck!

I'm not looking forward to it either Freckles. We know what price we're happy with and what the garage are prepared to buy it for so that should help us stick to our guns. Do you expect someone to turn up with cash or do you go to a bank with them to watch it being transferred? I feel very mistrusting but remember hearing stories of people losing their cars by cheques bouncing.

Had fun selling ours, not! Everyone is after a bargain, many of whom like to start haggling on the phone before you even meet them or they have seen the car. Then you get them telling you, OK i come at 7pm and turn up at 11pm and ring your doorbell and expect to be shown the car. My favourite has to be the jokers, OK i give you half cash! @#$#@!!!! Good luck just make sure that your advert is assertive!
