Has anyone been to Iceland?

I want to take DH there for his 40th this year and would love any recommendations from anyone on what to do where to go and where to stay.
We can only realistically get 3 nights max away from the kids and will want to cram in as much as possible!

Thanks TanyaR. I'm so excited now!!! Especially at the thought of the blue lagoon! What time of year did you go? We'll be there in November which I think is a good time for the northern lights. I think we'll hire a car as DH is a pretty good map reader and I'm a photographer so having the flexability to stop the car wherever we like is perfect. Did you go from the UK and do you remember who you flew with? There seems to be some reasonable deals around for flights and short break packages from the UK (where we are now) I love planning surprises, just hope I pull it off as i've never managed to surprise him before - my plans have either fallen through or he's found out!!

ooooh, I went to Iceland with a few friends, and have to say, it is one of the most incredible trips I have done! I wouldn't recommend where we stayed, but I would definitely stay somewhere centrally in Reykjavik particularly if you don't hire a car. If you aren't particularly good at reading maps, I would definitely recommend doing a tour - we hired a 4wd for us, but if I had been on my own or just with one other I would have done a tour. The glaciers are really far apart and quite a drive on desolate land (so make sure you take snacks and drinks with you). You definitely need to make sure you go in the right season, and stay for a few nights, so you can catch the northern lights at night (be warned, even in the right months you might miss them if there is cloud or just not the right timing). The other thing I would recommend is definitely visiting the blue lagoon hot pool resort/spa - it is lovely, if you a massage make sure you book in advance. If you want to treat yourself to an amazing dinner, we had the tasting menu at The Fish Market, I am a huge foodie, and can quite honestly say it is one of the best meals I have ever had. They are the major standouts I can think of for the moment! Enjoy!

Izzy99 - I thought after I'd posted that someone would think I was on about the supermarket ;) Madolecow - I've had a look at lots of tours online but I'm looking for some personal recommendations and I really like booking my own accomodation and would like to make our own itinerary. I know its gonna be pricey but as my DH treated me to a 4 day trip to New York staying at the Waldorf for my 30th I want to make his 40th really special and its somewhere he's always wanted to go :)
