Maids Rooms - Spot Checks

After clearing out a disgusting maids room today, and getting rid of 12 bags of rubbish, and having to throw away pots, pans, cooker, microwave, sandwich maker, chest of drawers (all just under 6 month old) and all the bedding. And finding lots of stuff that belongs to me and my DD (nothing of value). Is it OK for me to do the occasional spot check on the helpers room in future. The floors, fridge and all cupboards where just disgusting. It was a serious health hazard. I do not want to do room spot checks but I do not want another maid to live in squalor in the room again.

Back in the day...I too did the live in pub thing and a few nanny gigs in the UK and I never would have had any illusion that my "room" or flat would not be open to inspection at their discretion. As in, it was there property and I was an employee. Just as a parent has the right... I didn't expect them to go through my chest of drawers or my wardrobe but I do not see anything wrong with having a look in the room on a weekly basis or whenever you want! Not that it has to be "perfectly clean" upon each inspection but just for you to have a look. You didn't say whether or not there were children in your house but if so, I would DEFINITELY say you would check it weekly, even if just a peek. edited by ccdoha on 21/03/2011

Thank you for your replies. If we get another helper, I will do spot checks. Have learnt an expensive lesson.

and now let the EW police come in and tell us they need to be treated as we wish to be treated, and yet they can clean a house etc to your standard, but still like to live in the slums. I have no problem with spot checks and wouldn't mind being treated that way myself. Many years ago when starting out on my OE I did the antipodean live in job in a London pub thing. We had spot checks on our rooms and it didn't bother me at all. In fact, given some of the slobs working there I thought it was a good thing.

I check from time to time now, I didnt check for 5 months only to do it one day after SMELLING her room (and its an outside one) and found a complete mess. The room will need to be repainted when she leaves, she has been smoking in it (didnt even know she was a smoker) and bed, mattress, bedding etc all ruined. The BRAND NEW furniture will not be fit for another maid. Discusting, she had open tins of old mouldy food on the floor, and she wonders why her room has ants. YUK YUK YUK YUK. Actually, I havent checked for a while now, I better do it again. I ask her weekly if her room is clean and she says yes, then I give her "the look" and ask "my clean or YOUR clean" and she says "my clean madam" and gets the mop bucket, lol rights? She had them and abused them. I will check her room whenever I want to after what I found that day thank you very much. edited by Purple on 21/03/2011

I've always done checks and have to say my maid who has just finished her contract left her room immaculate.

You had a day like me then ;) we had loads of bin bags i couldnt believe how dirty my one was..... Throwing all the drawers and microwave atc away as well tomorrow....and fleas were everywhere. After just 4 months. I def agree that everyone should do spot checks to make sure they are keeping it clean and not filling up the room with rubbish...... It s put me off from having a live in maid for ever now!
