Stick to the Eastern and Northern parts of the island. The western waters have a fair amount of sea snakes and sea urchins ;) That said we have been all over the island over the years and never ran into problems. The water is beautiful. With the Maldives we found that there were very strong undercurrants and that the calm look of the sea is extremely deceiving. I nearly ran into trouble near Kuredu island actually because of the rip.

We went to Mauritius and stayed at the Hilton Hotel, it was perfect. There were lots of children there, although I don't have any of my own, but the sea was calm and shallow. Lovely resort for a break and if I remember rightly there were lots of children that were entertained by the hotel staff. Go for it!

I went to a hotel called La Pirogue - i would not of said the sea was particularly rough - perhaps it was just stormy when your friends were there. the pool at La Pirogue is a shelving one so is perfect for little ones and although i didn't have kids at the time of being there i do recall that there appeared to be a very good kids club. Gorgeous country enjoy it if you do decide to go.
