An interesting article today concerning a woman who was the victim of a crime and ordered to pay AED285K in fees to a public hospital in Dubai to cover her treatment costs.

Thankfully the police have stepped in but it brings up the question of fee differences between public and private hospitals. I was always under the impression that if you have a government health care card, you are entitled to no or low cost medical services in government and hospital clinics - not so??

Apparently, the rules have changed. In January, I went to the Al Safa public clinic to have a health card for my former maid and I was told that the costs incurred by foreign people in public hospitals will be the same, whether or not they have a health card. No one would get a health care card if this was true, they're 350AED a year. This is wrong. I had my bill cut in half because of my card a month of so ago. That's why they told me that it's not necessary to pay for a health card since there is no discount anymore for the health card holders. They also told me that it's a new regulation. If you discover that what I was told is wrong, please let me know. Thanks edited by KB75 on 11/03/2011

AmyAus82, please let me know how you get on. I have been curious for a long time about this but have not yet gone to Rashid Hospital to sort it out. I'll post about it as soon as I go and let you know. I too have been wondering for some time and now I'll give it a go and Insha'Allaaaaah have a positive outcome. Or for support, we could go together!

I understood if you paid the 350 for the health card at Rashid then the traetment was free - has this changed ? That was never the case. If you pay 350AEd for the Health Care Card you will pay half of what you would without the Health Care Card, but not free, unless, as I mentioned, you come in in an ambulance or are local.or if you are a foreigner married to local. Not quite. This is quite a debated topic amongst foreign wives who've decided to keep their passports, some say you can get it, some can't. Some women have got it. Some don't. I'm the latter. When I asked they say 'no, only when you're pregnant and only for illnesses related to pregnancy'. Others say they were given it. I would love to hear from a wife who does have it and let me know how she got covered. If you're the wife of an Abu Dhabi local you get cover in all hospitals in Abu Dhabi with Thiqa, but in Dubai you have to fight your way through authorities and staff to find out what you're actually entitled to, if anything. amyaus, I used to have it. My friend has it. I do not know why some women are refused, I am tempted to wonder wether it is about the husbands nationality status or even tribe. I know they are entitled to it. When I asked they didn't know anything about my husband, and if it was on that we'd definitely be entitled to it because of the area we live in and the family name. Did you have it through DOHMs or MOH? Someone once mentioned it could be a MOH card, not the DOHMs card. I would love ti know where you friend went/how she got it and if she had to talk to anyone particular who knew what they were doing. It's quite frustrating because it's one rule for Peter and one for Paul and no one knows the rules so they tell you their opinion rather than asking any information from their supervisors so it's a pain. just a regular DOHMS health card the same as everyone else. Copy of nationality book is required (obviously with your name in it) that is all I think that's the problem - whenever I go I take my pport only and they just do it off there and I've never taken the book. Let me go in with the book and see how that tickles their fancy : ) Thanks for the info!take your dh'S health card and pp copies and do this at the main centre in Rashid Hospital. The peripheral clinics cannot deal with it.
