somewhere for afternoon gathering?

It is my husband's 30th birthday soon, I have organised a meal for the evening with friends but I wanted to also do something in the afternoon - however seeing as the meal will be expensive I want to arrange something cheap or free for the daytime.
However I am totally stuck for ideas! I thought about a beach club but they all tend to be expensive - I thought of just a beach picnic but am not actually sure where a nice spot would be, we usually go to JBR beach but it isn't the nicest.
So does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks very much in advance :)

the kite beach is nice, further down at Um Sequiem. If you are facing the seaside it is about 500 metres from DOSC and you cut down onto it just before the petrol station, coming from town end. If you go along there, a small development is taking shape, volleyball courts, soapy footy for the kids and adults, kayak hire, posh sunshades, toilets and showers. It is free and such nice place. further along this beach is just perfect, no one around and very peaceful. Take a drive around and have a look see! Thanks for this, I will check it out. Sorry to not be able to understand your excellent directions but when you say coming from 'town end' do you mean driving away from Jumeirah? So I should drive on Beach Road in Marina direction and turn onto the beach next to a petrol station approx 500 metres away from DOSC? Thanks again!

Picnic at Safa park? The weather is lovely these days. Or try another beach... maybe somewhere down Jumeirah beach road, preferably before the Jumeirah beach park.
