LO's bday is approaching and wanted to start looking at ideas for finger food for both the little ones and the adults.
There'll be approx 8 children between the age of 2-4 and additionally 10 if not more adults.

What did you serve on your LO's bday bash that was a hit - trying to stay away from ordering it outside - want to make/prepare it ourself.

A friend served fruit skewers ... she threaded slices of kiwi, strawberry, banana and that twisty marshmellow onto shashlick sticks (long wooden skewers usually found in the bbq section) ... and she told me that she has seen a peacock being made out of similar stuff on some youtube video ... have been saving that idea for my DS's b-day but you can have it now :) another one: again same wooden skewers , thread small cubes of potato, onion, capcicum and chicken marinated in salt, pepper, mustard, soy sauce etc .... repeat 2-3 times and dip in a batter made with egg, little water and all-purpose flour seasoned with salt and pepper ... deep fry and if you are into baking and stuff you can make chicken bread or olive bread (dont have the recipes)...and slice it to serve

Just to confirm that the Annabel Karmel chicken balls are fantastic- when I made them the first time for my then-toddler, my husband ate the whole batch before they made it into the freezer! You may need more than you think, if the adults get into them!

cheese and pineapple cubes on a cocktail stick (non lethal) Tiny tomatoes (already suggested) I love a bit of Annabel Karmel and these chicken balls are always a hit: http://www.food.com/recipe/annabel-karmels-chicken-and-apple-balls-403797 or any of these: http://www.annabelkarmel.com/recipes/party-food http://www.annabelkarmel.com/recipes/new-finger-foods But there are loads of great ideas on there too for other things. Take a look around. Little cheese brerads (pizzas) which are freshly cooked instore at Union Co-op (behind shangri-la anyway), cheap and yummy I love kids party food, if I think of anything else, I'll be in touch....! Oh yes, a bit naughty but for some inspirational ideas: http://www.thelimetreecafe.com/Pages/CategoryGroups.aspx?ID=10 Can I come?

I recently did my DS bday finger food at the park.... - two trays of sandwiches (turkey, cheese separately) cut into stars and butterflies - one tray of chocolate crackles (coco pops kind of stuck together) - one tray of honey joys (corn flakes kind of stuck together) - fruit kebabs (cut a rockmelon in half and put pineapple/strawberries on toothpicks in each half) - apricot balls (apricot white choc concoction rolled into finger sized balls) I made plenty of each and kids and parents had the same, no need to cater separately imho. All were enjoyed, we didn't go home with any leftovers! HTH :) ETA - I did all but the sandwiches before hand. Helps if you only have 1 thing to do on the day! edited by Dan Lou on 08/03/2011

You could do platters of: Cockail savouries - samoosas, pies, sausage rolls, pizzas, quiches Cold meats: Mini meatballs, cubes of cheese, cherry tomatoes, Smoked turkey rolled on toothpicks Dippers - hummus & crudities Cocktail rolls - slice open on the top and fill with various fillings (vienna with tomato sauce/mini sausage/egg mayo/tuna mayo/coldmeat & mayo/chicken mayo) and garnish with lettuce and cucumber slices Mini ciabattas - buy a long drumstick roll, cut into slices at an angle, drizzle with olive and sprinkle with chopped up garlic or a basil pesto and top with vegetarian toppings (grilled aubergine with balsamic red onions/zuccini and mushrooms/mozarella with tomato and basil/etc) and bake in the oven until crispy - a real hit with the adults! edited by habibti on 08/03/2011

- cheezy puffs (puff pastry with cheese grated on top) - mini pizza (use a small arabic bread, bit of tomato puree/ sacla sauce, chopped olives && veg and mozzarella) - bowl of fruit - more fruit! - cubes of cheese - cooked sausages (do 4 times the amount you think you need because they will fly off the plate!) - chopped veg and dips (cucumber, peppers, etc... and hummus, etc) - cupcakes! You could also do mini spinach and feta tarts, which are really easy. Press some puff pastry into the muffin tin cavities, mix feta, spinach, and egg in a bowl, pour into the pastry and bake until the mixture is firm. Oh, and another thing I do, which is really nice too is (yes, more puff pastry!) antipasto squares. Get a square of puff pastry, score a border in it about 15mm from the edge, fill the inside of the border with some chopped cherry tomatoes, antipasto (grilled aubergines/ artichoke hearts...), sprinkle some mozarella on top is you want, whoosh round the edge with some milk or egg white and then bake until golden. edited by Hello.Again.Kitty on 08/03/2011
