I did, and DH is being lovely about it. Even if it's not covered by our insurance we'll work out what charms I had and get it replaced. I kind of wanted to know one of the maids had taken it just so I knew I wasn't going mad, if that makes sense! I really, really wish part-time cleaners were legal.

I guess they must have done. I haven't done anything yet but I'm going to ask DH to call them and cancel, just in case they think I might want them back, and also get him to ask for a list of all the names. I really think that should be something the police should have done, though, and I'm kind of thinking it'll be pointless now because if they've already searched the accommodation anyone hiding stuff will have seen that and ditched it just in case.

I got a call to go to the police station this morning to identify some jewellery. I got all excited, and it wasn't mine :(. They didn't find anything with the maid who comes every week or the one who came too last week, but they did find a whole stash of chains and necklaces taken by another maid. The guy I spoke to said if I ask the agency for a list of all the maids who have been to our house since we started using them, they can investigate further. Isn't this something they should have done?! When I gave my statement I said three or four different maids had been at the start until we started using the same one weekly, and I also said the weekly one brought two or three different ones with her over the weeks. The statement apparently says only two maids came. I wish I'd taken an Arabic speaker even more now :(.

DC it is a hard one., If you do not prosecute then she will carry on, plus she knows where you live and may come back for revenge (who knows...) perhaps you could ask that you want your things back plus you want to see her cancellation papers and then you will not let it go to court. Nobody wants a dragged out court case, but this maid needs to leave and the others at the agency need to see what will happen to them if they choose to follow her path. The agency don't want to send her as it will be costly for them, they will just bang her head against the wall a few times. I suggest you ignore the agency calls and get a local to go with you to the station to find out where the case is now.

Shucks, I was just about to ask for the number :(. I really thought we'd found a good one with this agency because the maid who came every week was really good at her job. Back to the drawing board. I had to pop back to the police station this morning as my phone rang at 10am and it was the maid agency. The police had told me not to talk to them, so I tried calling the station to ask their advice but got nowhere and ended up going in there to ask what was happening. I'm none the wiser now :\:. I really wish I spoke Arabic and aside from kicking myself that I didn't take better care of my things, I'm now also kicking myself that I haven't got off my backside enough to learn the language. I think the policeman said this morning that CID would have gone to the agency by now and that was probably why they were calling me. I have no idea if they searched the accommodation, though. What makes you say they might not, A Rancher? I guess if they don't I have even less than Buckley's chance of ever seeing my bracelet again :(. The policeman taking my statement asked me what I wanted when I was there on Friday night - did I just want my things back? And I said yes; I'm not sure if he meant did I want her flogged and deported?! We use a great agency that's based in Sharjah but uses House Boys, and our lad who comes each week has been with us a year now. I trust him implicitly! They have a key to the house, although I'm usually in when he gets here. There is sometimes money left around (only a few hundred dirhams) but nothing has ever gone missing. He is Sri Lankan and a very quiet spoken lad, but really sweet, a hard worker and the lady who runs the agency is British. The employees are treated extremely well and the are paid a good wage too for them to send home. I made sure I checked all this before employing them, as I want to make sure the staff are well treated. We gave our lad a 'bonus' at Christmas and he almost burst into tears. His cleaning went from good to great after that. I hate to say it but I would rather have a male cleaner now than a female Filipina. I had a girl before and all I got was moaning about how hard done to she was, how she couldn't afford anything, etc, etc... While I sympathise with everyone's situation, I am employing a person to do a job in my own home. Do the job, get paid and leave - just don't take any of my hard worked for belongings with you!! Hope it all works out for you my love xIf you don't live in Shj then this company is working illegally. Just be warned that it is your responsibility to check they have a Dubai trade license. JFYI

I don't think they'll search the accommodation they'll just put pressure on her to confess. From what I've seen they are not big on evidence here and tend to rely on "confessions" to secure convictions. edited by A Rancher on 06/03/2011 Why don't you think they will search the accommodation? I would have thought they would have done that and her and possibly all other maids straight away.
