and if you have an unlocked phone you can plug in a unlimited minutes pre paid sim card from at&t for example. I think ours was $60 and expired after 60 days or something... they have lots of options if your phone is unlocked. $60 for 60 days is awesome! We got a T-mobile sim card while we were in Colorado to use with an unlocked phone. We started with pay as you go and then switched to a package they have that is unlimited calls and texting withing the US for $50 for 1 month... and I think it was $70 for the same option plus a data package.

We just need it for the six weeks that we're travelling so that we can confirm campsites etc. It makes it even better that it can be recycled at the end of our trip too. :-)

Thanks spongemonkey - that's the kind of info we wanted. Thanks again. They don't keep as it were as you are required to top up every 90 days to keep your service or make a one off payment of $90 for the year.... not worth the hassle and of course, depends how often you go there!

And if you have an iPad 3G you can get a month subscription for about $25 and you have Internet wherever you are!

Your best bet is just to buy one of the Pay as you go mobiles there. They sell them for $19.99 and usually there is credit in the box with that. You then just buy up top up cards. e.g. We have used Virgin in the past. You get them all over eg Target or Best Buy and you just get rid off at the end of your use. I know Virgin provide a bag to mail back to them. eg http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Virgin+Mobile+-+Samsung+Mantra+No-Contract+Cell+Phone+-+Black/Silver/9405841.p?id=1218099974198&skuId=9405841

We're going to hire a winnebago and travel from San Francisco to New York on holiday and would like to sort out a Pay As You Go sim card in the States for the duration of the trip. Can any of you ladies tell us the best network etc to opt for and whether they are freely available? Thanks in advance.
